The city of Sacramento is in the fourth year of a record drought yet the Nestlé Corporation continues to bottle city water to sell back to the public at a big profit, local activists charge.
The Nestlé Water Bottling Plant in Sacramento is the target of a major press conference on Tuesday, March 17, by a water coalition that claims the company is draining up to 80 million gallons of water a year from Sacramento aquifers during the drought.
The coalition, the crunchnestle alliance, says that City Hall has made this use of the water supply possible through a corporate welfare giveaway, according to a press advisory.
A coalition of environmentalists, Native Americans and other concerned people announced the press conference will take place at March 17 at 5 p.m. at new Sacramento City Hall, 915 I Street, Sacramento. ................(more)

(37,364 posts)bottled water companies. We have good tap water in the US. Buy a jug that you can carry with you. Create a movement to save water and to reduce the pollution created by these plastic disposable bottles. Make it unfashionable to purchase water in this fashion. Water should be public utility.

(14,449 posts)You can save on your water bill. I can get two cases of Nestles for 2.49. That is really cheap. I often wonder how they make a profit. However, I don't use bottled water for everything. Two cases of bottled water lasts me a couple months normally. I use it for running around doing errands and at the gym. The gym especially is a great use for it. Of course now you want to use bottled water sparingly at least until California recovers.

(38,437 posts)You can drink and use tap water for the same price or lower, far less than for bottled water.

(14,449 posts)There is a minimum charge we pay that is around 30 bucks a month. That is outrageous quit frankly but what can you do. I think minimum charges are BS.

(32,723 posts)The water in Anaheim came from underground limestone caves so it was very hard.
In Vegas it's not bad because of the alkaline soil here. In Battle Creek it was rusty looking in the tub. In New York City it looked slightly blue/green. Chicago water was surprisingly clear on the west side.
Chlorine levels varied.

(29,676 posts)I have a Brita bottle with a filter, a friend has a Camelbak. Each costs about $20.
I notice more and more women at the gym are carrying bottles with filters instead of buying or bringing bottled water. And the nice thing about the filter is that I can refill it all day long, wherever I am.

(16,113 posts)You lost your case.
Nestle is taking the water they sell out of the same system as everyone else. Because they're a bulk user, they get it at a better rate than everyone else, but they don't own, operate, or manage the water supply. None of this is good, but it's not privatization, either.
Spitfire of ATJ
(32,723 posts)Oh wait,.....companies don't CARE about getting good PR any more.
Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)... they would want some aspect of control of the water system. Now THAT would be privatization. Congrats, Spitfire, you were the first on this thread to suggest that Nestle SHOULD be part of the privatization of the Sacremento water system.

(38,437 posts)Water privatization is used here as a shorthand for private sector participation in the provision of water services and sanitation (the sale of water resources themselves is covered in the article on water trading).

(38,437 posts)I never cease to be amazed that DUers so eagerly post rank bullshit here without remorse or even a second thought.
1) From the article: "Nestlé pays only 65 cents for each 470 gallons it pumps out of the ground." That ain't stealing.
2) The coalition is protesting Nestlés virtually unlimited use of water up to 80 million gallons a year drawn from local aquifers while Sacramentans (like other Californians) who use a mere 7 to 10 percent of total water used in the State of California." Nestle's consumption is 0.0006% of the total, or 1/10,000 that used by Sacramentans. How manipulative.
3) Nestlé pays only 65 cents for each 470 gallons it pumps out of the ground the same rate as an average residential water user. But the company can turn the areas water around, and sell it back to Sacramento at mammoth profits. Right. So, why buy their bottled water?
Yeah, bottled water is ridiculous. It generates tremendous amounts of waste plastic and is totally unnecessary because city water is every bit as safe and clean as Nestle's bottled water.
Hey, Sacremento! Quit being stupid and stop buying bottled water!

(1,569 posts)Just kidding. Words have meanings, unless you're on the attack. Then you can accuse people of stealing something they paid for. People like to attack before they look at the big picture. Bottled water uses 80 million gallons! Fracking uses 70 million gallons! They don't ever stop to think about how 80 million gallons is .00008% of the trillion gallons that almonds use. It is far less than a rounding error for almond growers. In the private market, when there is a very low supply, and a very high demand, companies... do something. I can't put my finger on it, but it usually works. Wait, I think they ration it, right?

Demand that Nestlé stop bottling CA's water during drought!
California is facing a drought of historic proportions and while individuals are being forced to reduce their water usage, Nestlé is bottling the scarce resource straight from the heart of Californias drought and selling it for profit.
Nestlé -- who extracts water from CA for its Arrowhead and Pure Life brands -- is bottling from at least a dozen natural springs throughout California, including from some of the most drought-stricken areas of the state.
Nestlé has repeatedly ignored requests from local residents and activists to halt its irresponsible bottling operations, so now its time for state water regulators to step in!
With a recent report showing that California only has enough water to last the state one more year, we must put an end to this madness at Nestlé before its too late. Join us!
SIGN THE PETITION to tell the California Water Resources Control Board:
While California is facing record drought conditions, it is unconscionable that Nestlé would continue to bottle the states precious water, export it, and sell it for profit. As a consumer and concerned citizen, I call on you to immediately stop Nestlés bottling operations in California.

(16,133 posts)We reuse our 5 gallon bottles and take them in to be refilled with water (city water) that is run through a filtration system, for about 18 cents a gallon. Works for us since our city likes to add large amounts of chlorine to our water. Filtered tastes better for drinking and making coffee.

There's not 25% I can cut out of that. I say squeeze Nestle. If they have a hissy and leave the state, tonto mejor. We don't need sociopaths in our neighborhood.

(23,806 posts)You do not raise cattle and slaughter them. You simply stick a pipe in the ground and turn on the spigot. You're a douche bag for sucking the water out of the ground for a needless product that pollutes our streets and waterways with your infernal plastic bottles and plastic ring holders. There is no need for bottled water in the US. The majority of municipal water systems produce perfectly fine water. If you need filtered water, buy a filtering system and filter your own. It's more economical and more environmentally friendly.
