Its not discrimination, they say. Its not bigotry. We just dont like their kind. Its not us, its our God, see? He doesnt like their kind. We have a right, they say, a right to refuse service, a right to keep them out of our schools, out of our government, out of our neighborhoods. We have a right to hate them, to despise them. Theyre not like us, theyre not saved, not favored by our God, theyre not like real Americans. Its our right to believe what we want. Its not discrimination, its not!
In fact, said a prominent American Christian politician yesterday, they should be grateful. Yes, grateful. Grateful that we real Americans tolerate them at all. Why, in non-Christian countries theyd be put to death. So, yes, they should be grateful for what they have here in America. Second class is better than nothing and they should be grateful.
Bigots always say that.
They should be grateful.
Yes, they should be grateful. Why do they want to be here anyway? Why, you know, if I was them, if I was them, why I would just go somewhere else. I would. I wouldnt make a big fuss. If a business refused to serve me, why thats their right. Id just take my business elsewhere. Let the free market fix it. I wouldnt demand that they change their beliefs. Certainly not. Thats freedom. Thats liberty. Id just go somewhere else.
Sure.
Sure you would.
Lets just see what happens when when a Christian is refused service, shall we?

(82,383 posts)his car broke down in a black neighborhood. He went into a restaurant and they informed him, so he says, that they didn't want his kind there.
That only makes them say see, it's equal, we are victims too, so it's OK if we do it, since others do it to us.
They would play the victim to the hilt and use it to justify their bigotry, so that's not the answer.

(7,304 posts)Played sports in city rec league. Had a game at a park near my work which was located in a predominantly African American area of San Antonio's east side. Knowing I'd be close to work Saturday, I didn't pick up my pay check Friday. So, on Saturday, got to the park early and walked the 2 or 3 blocks to my work to get my check. Along the way a regular at the restaurant sees me and asks me what I'm doing in there and explains I'm not wanted (because I'm white) but because I work there it's ok to grab my check and leave. He walked me there and back to the park, chatting pleasantly along the way. He explained why all the regulars called me Kennedy (my haircut). When we got back to the park he recommended that in the future I pick up my paycheck in my car. Not everybody will recognize me out of my uniform so walking could be dangerous for me.
I was not angry, I was saddened because I knew why he had that attitude. If he was in a white community, he may have been gunned down by a police officer or neighborhood watch zealot. Not to mention the fact that his grandparents and parents wouldn't even be offered an opportunity to buy a home in that area legally. But when I was in his neighborhood, he walked with me and gave me safe passage. There's no equality in that.

(82,383 posts)I am living in the area I grew up in and it's much more diverse now. I think that most people want all of those barriers and lines broken down.
And unfortunately it sounds like he thought other people might harm you there. Which feeds into white right winger claims.

(18,998 posts)They just don't read it...just memorize certain passages out of context to the story being told and call it good...in fact they avoid reading it as much as possible.
Years ago I knew someone who was a Baptist church gower and she told me they went on Wednesday night to practice Sword Drill....which amounted to memorizing passages dealing with questions that might be asked of them...that is when I realized just how they had avoided the story the bible told and brainwashed the young.
