85K raised for Washington florist who refused gay couple

This is a shop in Eastern Washington, which is a right wing part of the state.

Entire article:

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — A florist in eastern Washington state fined $1,000 for refusing to sell a same-sex couple wedding flowers and also facing a consumer-protection lawsuit has netted more than $85,000 in a crowdfunding campaign.

The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/1GztB9a) that nearly half of the money on the gofundme.com page set up in February for 70-year-old Barronelle Stutzman came in the last several days.

Supporters compare Stutzman's benefit page to an Indiana pizza shop that raised more than $800,000 after closing when the owner said the shop wouldn't cater a gay wedding.

Stutzman, owner of Arlene's Flowers and Gifts in Richland, Washington, received the fine in Benton County Superior Court in March after refusing to serve a same-sex couple in 2013.
Stutzman says same-sex weddings go against her Southern Baptist beliefs.

There's an editorial to be written about it.

IMO, it needs to be discussed more widely.

to manipulate them and squeeze money out of them.

Think Duck Dynasty. Two winters ago, their crap in the stores wasn't selling so one of the actors said something bigoted and the bigots flocked to buy the stuff that was just sitting on shelves to show their solidarity.

Or maybe I'm just cynical.

The RWers have gotten very reactionary on this issue and they appear to be very willing to make it profitable to flout the law (as in Washington) or social convention (as in Phil Robertson, Indiana and Chik-Fil-A). Strategically speaking they seem to hold the upper hand. Is it worth a social media campaign calling someone a homophobe if all that does is gain them a few hundred thousands dollars? People will be falling over each other to have THAT happen.

So, then, how to deal with those such as Memories Pizza, Phil Robertson and Chik-Fil-A?

It's as if we are headed to tiny, self insulated communities more than ever.

No sense of community or willingness to work together.

Like the Republicans in Congress…..

Would it be nice if people would work together for community? Oh, absolutely.

Why can't people always work together? Because they have sincerely held differences in belief/values. They really do believe the things they say. We may find them to be wrong/pig-headed/bigoted but that doesn't make them -- or us -- any less sincere.

So, if the beliefs are sincerely-held and continuing to hold those beliefs impedes the sense of community we desire then we can only come together if one side relents in its beliefs. Should that be us? It's our idea so maybe we should lead by example -- but then we wouldn't be us, we'd be them.

But at least we'd be a community (or hive).

Generally, people come together for some calamity but when the danger has passed they return to their individual lives. I'm okay with that. I'll settle for that.

After Chick fil ay, they knew they could make money by deciding not to serve gays. After a while people will stop donating to ever stupid bigot that loses business and the rest of the bigots will suddenly feel like baking cakes for gays or selling them pizza or whatever they need to do to stay in business.
