Poland to build watchtowers at Russia's Kaliningrad border

Poland to build watchtowers at Russia's Kaliningrad border

50 metre high towers will be ready to begin surveillance in June according to border police

Poland will build six watchtowers to survey its 200-kilometre-long border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, border police have said.

The six towers will be up to 50 metres (164 feet) high and ready in June for round-the-clock surveillance, the spokeswoman for Poland’s border police told the PAP news agency.

They will cost more than 14 million złoty (3.7 million euros, $3.8 million), Mirosława Aleksandrowicz said, adding that 75% of the amount would come from an EU fund for external borders.

Kaliningrad is near the Baltic Sea, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania, both EU members. Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė said last month that Russia had sent nuclear-capable Iskander missiles to Kaliningrad, which could “reach even Berlin”.

Putin is the least classiest Bond villain in history.

He makes Kim Jong-un seem like an amateur.

Something that will provide pretty limited information although a high visibility target.

I suppose an artillery or air-to-ground missile attack would provide a couple moments of warning

Seems like high res photography from moderate altitude could provide as much information

5. Poland has been announcing significant defense acquisitions in the last year as well.

They're supposed to decide on the medium-range air & missile defense system soon and have started a competition for a shorter-range air & missile defense system. That's in addition to their other acquisitions.

This seems very old school compared to what a radar would alert you to. But maybe this is more of a visual defensive measure versus practical.

My guess is that NASA multi-spectrum satellite surveillance is available to the Poles for free.
