Generally Interesting Chicago Results by Ward

A question was asked in another thread about African American support for Rahm. The legwork on this was not hard. It consisted of checking the 2010 census for race by Ward (http://media.apps.chicagotribune.com/ward-redistricting/index.html ) together with the ward-by-ward results, accessible by drop-down here: http://www.chicagoelections.com/en/wdlevel3.asp?elec_code=9

Obviously, a bit of knowledge of Chicago doesn't hurt here. The conclusions from the data below? African American majority wards tended to mirror the total result for the most part, with perhaps a slight edge to Rahm. In other words, where the total result was Rahm 56% to Chuy 44%, African American majority wards tended to be about the same, with some edging closer to 58% to 42%.

The clear (and not unexpected) result is that the majority (and heavily) white wards broke huge for Rahm. They were in the 65% range for the most part. Some, like the 44th Ward, went huge for Rahm on lowish turnout: Rahm: 76% Chuy 24%. Unlike what we've been told here, the 44th Ward tends to be a youngish ward - lots of apartments and young people in that area. So, either the young white folks broke for Rahm, or they stayed home. I'm happy to hear another explanation for the 44th Ward results.

Majority African American Wards (according to 2010 census): 3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 28, 29, 34

Percentages in those wards:

Ward 3
Rahm 65% Chuy 34%

Ward 4
Rahm 58% Chuy 42%

Ward 5
Rahm 56% Chuy 44%

Ward 6
Rahm 56% Chuy 44%

Ward 7
Rahm 56% Chuy 44%

Ward 8
Rahm 58% Chuy 42%

Ward 9
Rahm 58% Chuy 42%

Ward 16
Rahm 51% Chuy 49%

Ward 17
Rahm 55% Chuy 45%

Ward 18
Rahm 51% Chuy 49%

Ward 21
Rahm 58% Chuy 42%

Ward 24 (West Side)
Rahm 52% Chuy 48%

Ward 28 (West Side)
Rahm 58% Chuy 42%

Ward 29 (West Side)
Rahm 57% Chuy 43%

Sampling of Rahm's total in the heavily white wards

Ward 41 (Far North West)
Rahm 64% Chuy 36%

Ward 47 (North center)
Rahm 62% Chuy 37%

Ward 44 (Lakeview, North Lincoln Park, etc. roughly 80% white, young)
Rahm 75% Chuy 24%

was a very strong turn out for Harold Washington in the Black ,Latino, LGBT and liberal communities to offset the white vote.

Chuy needed more support in the Black wards to offset the strong support in the white communities that went to rahm.

Plus, a few months ago no one knew Chuy. Not to mention, Chuy promised all sorts of new programs and our city is deeply in debt.

Chicago is still pretty segregated. It's not as bad as in the '80s. But, it's bad.

Of course more white votes would have been awesome.

There were tons of advertisements with lies in them from rahm.

I know Obama is from Chicago. But, he keeps coming back endorsing candidates for senator and governor who then lose to republicans.

Anyway it's true lots of blacks didn't vote for Chuy. But, lots more whites didn't.

Richard Daley and Jane Byrne split the vote. Washington 36%, Byrne 34%, Daley 30%.

I say "voters" rather than "people," because it's only the people who showed up at the polls who matter in an election. Clearly, those voters decided to go with the incumbent, rather than the challenger.

So, Chicago has its mayor, and that's that.

Those who do not have to live with the decision.

So, Rahm Emanuel will be the Mayor. And there it is. It demonstrates that things are as they always are on election day.

They'll be that way next year, too. If we want to win, we have to include that fact in our plans. People decide whether to vote or not, and the outcome is determined by those who decide to vote.

Yeah, of course Beverly and Mt. Greenwood are all white, they won't let black people move in there.

Mostly populated by city workers, police, fire, water dept. All good jobs and for decades handed out by the Jerimiah Joyce's organization. They were allies of the Daley clan. But Rahm cut them out of the O'Hare concessions. So Pickle, Jerimiah's son who runs the organization now, went out for Chuy. And lost.

I can't stand a lot of the Joyce's, Pickle and his drug dealer brother particularly. Nice to see a comeuppance.

I'd like to see that number. He got trounced in most of the majority Latino wards.

In the 22nd Ward (87% Latino), for example, Chuy won 80% of the vote. It's really not possible that Rahm won Latinos in this election. Where are you getting that?

It is something I wouldn't give Rahm a pass on myself. Chicago is notorious for it's graft and corruption. I lived in Illinois (Chicago burbs) when I was married and found that there was not much in the whole state that was not tainted by corruption. But I am sure you are correct in that "nobody" cares about the corruption/voter fraud allegations since it's the norm there.
