Police take woman's car away because her insurance company committed fraud

No typo in the subject line... here is the summary. Woman paid her premiums to a crook of an agent who was supposed to use the money to pay her insurance premiums to progressive. the checks to progressive bounced because the agent was a fraud and ripping off the money.

So the woman, who has no idea Progressive isn't getting their money, has HER CAR TAKEN AWAY by police because her insurance was fraudulent. Even though she paid all her premiums in good faith and the middle man was the one stealing the money.

I actually wrote the reporter on this story looking for more info because something about it really bugged me. WHY were the police even looking into her insurance? The woman who was ripped off is black and I'm seriously wondering if because she was black the police decided to run the info on her vehicle assuming it was stolen or not insured. The ONLY TIME I have EVER been queried for my insurance was when I was in a small fender bender. To my knowledge the police have never taken it upon themselves to just check my insurance for the sake of checking it. I will update if the reporter has an answer for me!

not at her fault, and that should be resolved. progressive has the biggest responsibility from what i see cause they allowed that agent to represent them.

any officer can and - in many states - is required to check for ins. because there is a major fine for not having, like in my state and all that surround it.

registration and insurance. I keep them together. I just always thought that is what they do every where.

First off, there is now way a vehicle should be impounded while not in use for invalid insurance. I'd agree with a summons to provide assurance of valid coverage or a fine if it could not be proved.
And seriously, WTF is "Your vehicle has been forfeited for fraudulent insurance" it reads, saying it is from the "Multi Jurisdictional Auto Theft Task Force." You lose your right to your property for a minor infraction? And WTF is "Multi Jurisdictional Auto Theft Task Force." Is it some analog to some "Homeland Security" performance theatre?
I have never been able to register a vehicle without some proof of insurance no matter what state I lived(generally NE US). Even though it was done through local agents the paperwork and approval was from the insurance provider. Is this a failure of local governments to do due diligence or the insertion of a non accountable third party in the process?
