I just got off the phone with Laurie, Chris' wife.
The news is not good.
His doctor says he will probably pass in the next 24 hours or so. It doesn't look like there will be any recovery from this overwhelming infection this time. No miracles this time.
It's pneumonia. His blood pressure is low, his fever is high, as is his heart rate.
Laurie's been at his bedside and the family is gathering to say goodbye. She has been talking to him, but she told me there's only been a glimmer of recognition from him.
I told her, keep talking. Hearing is the last sense to go, and he can hear you. Thank goodness for that.
Never again will we hear his intelligent, calm thoughts on current events, on movies, or books, or politics/economics...
Pass gently, Chris...see you on the flip side...

Laurie sounds like an amazing person as well. Thank you for keeping all of us in touch, Peggy.
WC Green has struggled valiantly--more than any being should ever be expected to. May he soon find the peace that he so truly deserves, and have a whole universe to explore. Love never dies.

I've been out of the loop for a while (stuck in a hospital in California for three months) so I am just now seeing this on W. C.'s status. My thoughts are with him and the family.

I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

(81,554 posts)Pneumonia is sooooooo rough on the weak and the sick. That can be the coup de grace. That's what kills so many people who have been struggling with other serious afflictions. When pneumonia gets into the lungs, that are already weakened and compromised, that's usually a bad sign.

Oh, how sorry - I have been reading all of the updates - even if I have not commented to often , just a few ones - but I have followed it as best I am able to do it - and I am sorry he is this state.. But that is the way all life must end - the clock i starting the first breath we take - to the last one we do, years after we was born..
I wish you - and all who is involved the best - and that mr WCGreen is given a comfortable journey to the next place, where he Will be without illness and without any pain anymore..
And, it is indeed a loss, when a person dies - all what he was - all what he would ever be - is there no more... And the loss can be hard to master... But in time, you, and others who knew him far better than i do - will remember him - and Cherish what he gave you and others, that be in private or here on DU..

(52,791 posts)I remember seeing a picture of him recently, how frail he looked, and seeing a note that he was suffering from a pressure sore and I feared that he might not have the strength anymore to fight his way back. Having recently lived through the loss of a loved one during a slow and difficult decline, my heart goes out to all who have been ministering to him and working so hard to ease his path.
We do not do this well in our country. The atomization of the extended family means that the burdens fall so hard on those closest, those most in need of support as they walk that rough road.
I wish for peace to rest on their shoulders.
