Officer Michael Slager’s Mother Speaks Out, Can’t Bring Herself to Watch Video

Officer Michael Slager has been charged with murder for shooting and killing Walter Scott as he was running away, and now Slager’s mother is speaking out about that tragic incident.

The video shows Slager shooting Scott, and then, moments later, handcuffing him and purportedly dropping a Taser near him. Before the video came out, police had said Scott tussled with Slager and grabbed the gun. After the video came out, Slager’s attorney withdrew immediately and Slager was fired, arrested, and charged with murder.

But when asked today if she’s seen the video, Slager’s mother Karen Sharpe told ABC News she has not:

“I’ve purposely not watched it. I’ve purposely not tried to hear people’s comments about it. I don’t––I just, I can’t watch it, I can’t read the papers, I just can’t. Maybe to some people it’s ‘Well, you’re being in denial,’ but I’m sorry, I just can’t. I just––I know how Michael is.”

She was tearful throughout as she talked about how her family and Scott’s have changed forever, and expressed her hope that “God takes care of everybody involved.” Sharpe said, “I can’t imagine him doing something that––that’s just not like him, that’s not his character. It’s not.”

Slager's mother and wife didn't murder Mr. Scott, Slager did. Having sympathy for what Slager's family is dealing with takes nothing away from the loss of Mr. Scott's family.

I'm not wanting to punish her, I don't doubt her anguish. I'm sure it's hard being pregnant and knowing that your husband just murdered someone, lost his job and will go to jail.

I simply do not extend my sympathy to everyone who comes along. There will be plenty of other people who will offer their sympathy, so she will not notice when I do not.

You would not expect the Scott family to offer her sympathy. Not sure why it's such a horrible thing that I do not.

BUT, if you want me to offer my sympathy to the mother of every killer, I guess I could... frankly, I don't need to know how they feel, and think it would be best if they suffered in private.

Interviewing Slager's mother is a ploy to garner sympathy. I'm not falling for it.

If Slager's wife is pregnant, I don't doubt that scads of conservatives will create a fund for her. She will get an outpouring of sympathy, too.

Please think for a moment, if they hadn't done the article, would you have automatically thought, "Oh, I should feel sympathy for Slager's mother. It must be a terrible weight on her."

I don't think so. It's a ploy.

Why did Scott run? He would have had a night in the can and bonded out after a judge lit into him about paying to support his kids.

Face it, Scott was not a nice guy and very poor hero material.

Slager was just another cop who was winded and pissed off and lost it and killed someone in anger.

Both families are going to suffer for the actions of two men who acted on impulse without thinking anything through. Neither family has done anything wrong.

I hope Slager is wise enough to plea bargain to manslaughter, get this over with, serve his time.

Both families are going to need sympathy and support.

a mother's love while coming to terms with what her son did will be a process for her. Make no mistake they are pulling out all the stops for him. They hired the best defense lawyer in the state, one of the top 100 in the country.

Unless she came out and initiated contact with the media or made statements supporting her son murdering that poor man in cold blood, she should not be fair game.

no matter what your child does, you love them and want to think the best of them.

I can cut her some slack and give her time to come to terms with this. She did nothing to deserve what is coming her way.

When she looks at him, she sees him through different filters than others do.

That doesn't mean I have no sympathy for Mr. Scott's family, what the cop did was wrong, I just don't expect his mom to be anywhere except denial right now.

Makes me wonder if he thought he was at the gun range.

I do feel bad for her though...I just feel worse for the mother that lost her son due to her "uncharacteristic" son.
