Mother Whose Seven Kids All Have Whooping Cough Is Now Urging Parents to Get Their Children Vaccinated
April 10, 2015 by Hemant Mehta 72 Comments
Tara Hills (below), a mother of seven from Ottawa, vaccinated her first three kids as any decent parent would (albeit on an alternative schedule so they hadnt received them all yet). But then she backed off completely for the other four.
So none of her kids had the full slate of vaccinations:
We stopped because we were scared and didnt know who to trust. Was the medical community just paid off puppets of a Big Pharma-Government-Media conspiracy? Were these vaccines even necessary in this day and age? Were we unwittingly doing greater harm than help to our beloved children? So much smoke must mean a fire so we defaulted to the do nothing and hope nothing bad happens position.
But something bad did happen. All seven of them developed whooping cough, leading to the quarantining of the kids and partial quarantining of Hills. She wrote about the experience, not to provide ammo for the pro-vaccination side, but to warn those parents who continue to question vaccinations that they should stop worrying and get their kids protected:
I said before that the irony isnt lost on me that Im writing this from quarantine. For six years we were frozen in fear from vaccines, and now we are frozen because of the disease. My oldest two are getting better, the youngest four are getting worse and fast. Ottawa Public Health has been so helpful and communicative, trying to get us the help we need while keeping the community safe. We are under quarantine and starting antibiotics. Tonight, the baby started whooping. I did the right thing going to the hospital when I did. I can only hope this painfully honest sharing will help others.

(181 posts)and vomited for 18 months. Good luck Mom. My mother was a wreck and she only had two of us and he wasn't as sick as I was.
Anti-vaxxers are child abusers.

(14,400 posts)anti-vaxxers have no concept of the serious nature of the diseases they laugh at.
If we ever get an outbreak of Diphtheria watch these wackos start running to the clinics.

(904 posts)My nephews ex was an anti vaxer and didn't believe in antibiotics, when their 2 yr. old son was sick with an ear infection (she has custody) she refused to take him to the Dr.'s for fear they'd put him on antibiotics. The poor kid was so sick and ended up in the hospital with septicemia, he was very lucky the infection didn't spread to his organs. With IV antibiotics he recovered very quickly but without medical care he would have died. This is painful to write...but after this experience both my nephew's kids are vaccinated and receive antibiotics when they are needed.
It takes a crisis to make these crazy people realize how wrong they are.

(109,009 posts)that she had already changed her mind about vaccines and had worked out a schedule with her doctor for getting her kids caught up -- which was supposed to start the following week. So she blamed herself for not changing her mind sooner.
So I doubt that she would have said no to standard treatment for whooping cough.
