Iranians Are Much Talked About on Sunday Morning TV, but Never Heard From

http://readersupportednews.org/opinion2/277-75/29573-iranians-are-much-talked-about-on-sunday-morning-tv-but-never-heard-from

But as these shows “cover” the Iran deal, one thing is glaringly missing: Iranian voices. There has not been a single Iranian official recently interviewed by any of these Sunday morning shows. When I raised this issue on Twitter a couple of weeks ago, a Meet the Press Senior Editor, Shawna Thomas, said the show had “put in a request” with Iran for an interview, while MSNBC’s Chris Hayes also suggested that it can be difficult to secure interviews with Iranian government officials.

That may be, but even if it is difficult to obtain interviews with Iranian government officials, it is extremely easy to interview Iranian experts, scholars, journalists and other authoritative voices from Tehran. Last week, Democracy Now‘s Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez hosted a fascinating hour-long discussion about Iran with Seyed Hossein Mousavian, a former nuclear negotiator for Iran who was Iran’s Ambassador to Germany from 1990 to 1997, and now teaches at Princeton. Just this week, CNN International’s Christiane Amanpour interviewed Tehran University Professor Sadegh Zibakalam about Tehran’s views and actions in the Iran deal. Beyond those in Iran, there are Iranian-American groups and Iranian-American experts who actually speak Farsi who don’t see the world the way Jeffrey Goldberg and Lindsey Graham do. Outside the Sunday shows, Iranian officials have been interviewed occasionally by U.S. media figures.

In sum, the only way to exclude Iranian voices is if you choose to exclude them. That’s exactly what Sunday morning television programs have done, and continue to do. And it matters a great deal for several reasons.

For one, excluding the Iranian viewpoint ensures that these shows spew propaganda to the American public. Iran is talked about, almost always in demonic terms, but is almost never heard from. That means that these shows, which endlessly boast of their own “objectivity,” are in fact far more akin to state media.

1. I think they exclude Iranian immigrant voices, too, for one reason. They sound like Democrats.

The mass of Iranians count on a social safety net there, believe in education more than the religion, and many of the youth like the West, although they are suppressed.

The war hawk media here is aiding the reactionary Iranina religious right in their oppression by giving fuel to regressive voices.

Just as the GOP did with their damn letter. The rightwingers of the world have united globally to silence all progressive voices. But we know this:

President Obama:

And speaking of conservative heroes, the Koch brothers bought a table here tonight. But as usual, they used a shadowy right-wing organization as a front. Hello, Fox News.

extreme right wing, conservative leadership in this country screams about the threat of extreme, right wing, conservative leadership in Iran.

This is what the ENTIRE middle east bullshit is about, extreme right wing, conservative elements at each other's throats.

You would THINK this being the case, people would ...

CUT OUR EXTREME RIGHT WING LEADERSHIP OUT OF IT.

But, somehow, they get the microphones stuck in their faces and get to drive the discussion about it.

When I talk about this stuff with people I know who are republicans, it blows their minds and they most often get agitated when I highlight that the leadership over there mirrors the republicans here.

They can't fathom that because they have been spoon fed for decades now that the weak liberal is in league with the terrorists!

The people they say are such a big threat scream about the same things they scream about - liberalism, secularism, they demagogue gays and are against abortion, want to keep women in their places.

Seriously, leave the rest of us out of it.

The Sunday Morning programs do not have a shred of objectivity. They are scripted and biased to the core. They would never allow Iran to express their views any more than they would have allowed Iraq to express their views leading up to the Iraq War.

And it isn't only with the Iran deal issue. It is every issue. These programs are worse than useless.

Boycott the Sunday Morning news programs.

Yes, these programs are less than useless because they play an active role in misinforming the American public.

The Iranians and the world want this deal, only the American MIC and it's corrupt politicians, pockets heavy with graft, does not.

The Sunday talk shows are owned by the MIC...war and money is all they know.

maybe they're all too busy attending executions of gay men or adulterous women to give interviews.

I'm perplexed by this new-found love of Iran and respect for present-day Iranian political culture here on DU.

It is the belief in war as a last possible resort and only when our nation is under a grave threat. It is a belief in the peace process which includes reasonable civil negotiations.

It does not include the sort of faked up threat fabricated to justify the Iraq War.

what I'm not appreciative of is the seemingly-nearly-full respect for anything which emanates out of Tehran and the unquestioning acceptance of its near-veracity.
