Is Connecticut the new Michigan?

Home to the biggest wealth gap in the nation -- think Bridgeport and Greenwich -- the state is making a strong case nationally that is the among the most sympathetic to the agenda of unions.

It was the first to commit to raising the minimum wage to $10.10 by 2017 and to pass paid sick leave, earning acclaim from President Barack Obama for Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and his progressive agenda. It was also the first to elect a state Senator solely on the Working Families Party line.

Connecticut finds itself again at the forefront of a landmark workplace initiative, with state Sen. Marilyn Moore, D-Bridgeport, introducing a bill that would fine corporations with 500 or more employees $1 an hour for each employee who makes less than $15 an hour. The money generated from the "low-wage employer fee," projected at up to $305 million a year, would then be used to pay for child care and home care for the elderly.
