Chris Christie Calls for Raising Age for Social Security, Cutting Benefit for Some Seniors

Send this ReTHUG scumbag to prison please

http://www.wsj.com/articles/christie-to-call-for-raising-age-for-social-security-cutting-benefit-for-some-seniors-1429018212
<snip>
Gov. Chris Christie called for reduced Social Security benefits for retired seniors earning more than $80,000 and eliminating the benefit entirely for individuals making $200,000 and up in other income, along with raising the retirement age to 69 from 67.

The changes would not apply to current retirees or those near retirement, but could help keep Social Security sustainable for future generations, Mr. Christie said. Not acting would jeopardize longevity of Social Security and other entitlement programs, he said, and potentially lead to massive tax increases to prop them up.

“Every other national priority will be sacrificed, our economic growth will grind to a complete halt and our national security will be put at even graver risk,” Mr. Christie said during a 40-minute speech Tuesday.

Mr. Christie’s decision to take on Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare and disability insurance stands as perhaps the most significant policy proposal to date in the 2016 race, and one that will likely result in attacks from Democrats and his potential Republican competitors.

$250,000 a year and still collect SSI. And IF they somehow lose everything, they get paid back all the money withheld. But we need to lower the age to 55 for ALL benefits. If we're considered seniors at that age, it's time to collect.

SSI (maximum monthly benefit this year is $773) is for disabled persons who aren't of retirement age and can't work.

Anyway, if Gov. Christie is that concerned about Social Security, why not do away with the earnings cap?

There are many workers, such as those in construction, whose bodies give out by the time they reach their sixties. Chris Crispy's proposal would hurt those people.

I don't know why politicians feel the need to advocate raising retirement age. If we adopted the other part of his proposal, means testing, we could all retire at 62. This is because the high income earners generally collect the biggest social security payments. I think it's as high as $3,600 a month now. So some elderly person who made mega-bucks during his or her earning years is now drawing a million a year from investments, and collects $3,600 a month from SS. If we could just get these people off the books, we would be in good shape. Talk of raising the retirement age is premature.

The requirement for getting all that sweet Wall Street money is to talk about "getting our fiscal house in order," "Fixing the Debt," and other similar code words for raising the retirement age, re-calculating benefits, or any other way they can think of to cut, slash, and burn America's modest-but-successful social safety net.

In the past it's sometimes been hard to find a Democrat who doesn't at least give lip service to the lie that Social Security is driving a "debt crisis" that will destroy us all, even though it is in surplus and adds nothing to the deficit. It's been "common wisdom" in D.C. for so long some don't even think about what utter nonsense it is.

Now it's on to Elizabeth Warren's push to expand benefits, and Alan Grayson's pledge to allow no cuts of any kind.

Nothing short of that will fly for Democrats going forward.

I imagine that he thinks that will hold off criticism of his plan from people closer to retirement. (Gaining a 6.2% increase in your paycheck has its appeal). So he'll make social security more 'sustainable' by reducing the money paid into it. Sure.

EXCEPT, he didn't mention Christie at all. He tried to say it was "those liberals" who were trying to implement this. Along with confiscating all bank accounts over 100K and forcing people with empty extra bedrooms to take in immigrants and drug addicts. .

. . .is a horrible idea and bad message.

I admit i'm ambivalent on means testing, even though when i pack it in (hopefully in 3 years) it might affect me.

The $200k number seems a reasonably high and fair value, as long as there is some indexing to regional cost of living. Serioiusly, $200k in Westchester or the swankier suburbs of LA or San Francisco would be a lot less money than $200 k in DesMoines.

I also think the $80k would have to inflation adjusted every year, because even well pensioned retirees are likely to have that income fixed.

A better idea is for Christie to shut the hell up, unless he wants to discuss raising the SS cap so people already making a quarter million and up fund the system better.
