Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo I moved to Florida, Melbourne on the east coast.
Lots of reasons why. My best friend from h.s. lives here, I am so much closer to the beach, I have my own place, and it was time for a change. My dad lives in Ft. Meyers, so once the dust settles, I will be able to see him more.
Hey! I couldn't afford the 'liberal' coasts and didn't want to deal with snow or drought. So sue me!
I am pretty happy. I'd rather die on my own stoop than a landlady's (another reason).
Come visit, maybe!

(12,132 posts)but I refuse to call it that. It is always the Beeline to me.
I live a block north of it.
Babylonsister - it's a little ways north of you - it goes straight east from Orlando to Cocoa Beach.
Welcome to FLA! watch out for Florida man - he gets around.

(12,132 posts)They'll never catch me calling it the Beachline.
The funny thing is I've probably been to the actual beach maybe 5 times in all those years.

(2,952 posts)It'll always be the Beeline to me....it's so much easier to take I95/Beeline to the airport and attractions than I4....

(53,661 posts)Can't do anything, don't have a dime. And it hurts to not have a house now, could have bought one for what I've spent on rent here. And like you, I want to live on the beach.
Could rent and live VERY well on SS at apartment right on the Gulf Coast. Just can't figure out how to do it with family here. I am so happy you got a place you can afford, I hate drought areas, too. Just put a little aside in case a hurricane comes.
And increase the blue vote in Florida! Congratulations, babylonsister!

I have family scattered throughout Florida.
Congrats on your move. Enjoy the beach.

(3,117 posts)Electorally speaking, Florida is very frustrating. More registered Ds than Rs, but so badly gerrymandered there's almost no hope of ever having representative government in our legislature. At least Crist was amenable to supporting our paper ballot efforts and helped to get us switched over from those nasty black box touchscreens. But, truly, we haven't had a good governor here since Bob Graham. We can certainly use your D energy!!

(41,184 posts)far from Melbourne in Merritt Island, but moved. She look us to casual bistros in charming Cocoa Bch and cute old time and independent breakfast and lunch places in that area. Having friends and family around plus natural beauty is terrific! Some day we'll get away from higher urban costs-

(6,610 posts)I'm on Merritt Island. Been here 3 years & I love it.
Going to the beach in January while my friends & relatives are freezing up north just never gets old. Of course I have to rub it in by posting pics.
Hope you enjoy it here!

(2,741 posts)Beach people and others, of course, seem to like Florida. I have lived here twice before...Ocala and Fort Lauderdale...much prefer Ocala, but I must say...I don't like living here. I am here in Lake Worth for the second and last winter I will spend in Palm Beach County. If I had to deal with the insane drivers on a daily basis...Well, I would become one of those insane drivers.
Happiness to all who love Florida.
Total population of our Island...140,000 Total population of our village...probably 350

Also, two things you MUST try:
1) Grapefruits and Honeybell tangelos from Harvey's Groves.
2) Key Lime pie (buy it whole) from Publix. Cheap and delicious.

Hopefully you have not only your own stoop, but maybe a mango tree or two in the yard?
Plus: Road trips to Key West!

(17,155 posts)I could easily move to Florida again, even with all the insanity. I've got a brother still back there, and friends, so it could be a soft landing. And, there are plenty of Democratic voices around.
When you're in Florida, you can actually find plenty of . . . Florida, if you look.
Now that you're a Floridian, you can read some Carl Hiassen http://www.carlhiaasen.com/
Dave Barry http://www.davebarry.com/
and Edna Buchanan http://www.ednabuchanan.com/
and you can check out paintings by George and Ellis Buckner, and other Highwayman artists: http://www.thehighwaymen.com/index.html

(30,481 posts)I absolutely love it. A little bit of everything around me. Well, except for uneven terrain. Ft. Meyers is ok, specially if one is older in years. Many places on the east coast really paid a price during the recession. Ft. Pierce is a shell of its former sel. Other areas really seem to be thriving. Have a great time and let me know if you pass through Tampa or Ft. Pierce. I am very knowledgeable about the Tampa Bay area and have a relative in Ft. Pierce who serves up some great food.
