We are about to find out how repulsively sexist America is the same way we found out how racist it really was.

I just read a piece on cracked.com about how many classic tv shows would not be tolerated today because of the sexism.

hell but that was part of the gag. Just doing it for the shock value rather than actually thinking that's the way things are supposed to be.

and most any workplace show where a woman and man work together and unwanted touching was normal then but would get you fired for sexual harassment today.

Also more subtle stuff along gender roles for who should do what sort of work. In the past it would be men protecting women. But more recent shows will show women protecting men. Or the woman would be the badass crimefighter while her husband is a schoolteacher and blissfully unaware of her kill count (The Blacklist), and there are more female villains now(Once Upon a Time, Homeland).

Some recent shows that are set in the past even show how gender roles allowed female villains to fly under the radar. (Foyle's War)

I can't remember which show or movie it was, but they clearly had a woman who they thought was a victim turn out to be the mastermind behind it all.
