MO National Guard Calls Ferguson Protestors ‘Enemy Forces,’ ‘Adversaries’

Last year, when Missouri governor Jay Nixon deployed the National Guard, at first, many were pleased with the development. After all, police departments from Ferguson and surrounding areas had failed miserably in peacekeeping efforts. Called “enemy forces” and “adversaries” in documents obtained by CNN, it is clear the units did not see protestors as American citizens exercising their ferguson protest ferguson protest constitutionally protected rights.

In a statement released by the command, the National Guard defended its references. “The document referenced uses a generic military planning format utilized in a wide range of military missions, so the term ‘enemy forces’ would better be understood as ‘potential threats.’ Often in Guard operations, threats would include inclement weather, heat, failing levees, etc.”
