Russian Government Evacuates Civilians From Yemen, Including Americans

ANA'A, April 24 - Two Russian planes evacuated around 200 civilians from 20 different countries last night from Sana’a International Airport.

Two fully-packed planes left the capital following a lull in Saudi-led coalition airstrikes since Wednesday, when coalition forces declared an end to Operation Decisive Storm, carrying citizens of Russia, Cuba, Armenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and the United States.

The 20 American citizens on board had to find their own way out of war-torn Yemen as the US State Department reconfirmed their position on April 21 that their government has no intentions of carrying out evacuations for their citizens, instead advising US nationals who wish to depart the country to stay alert for any upcoming opportunities.

An official at Sana’a International Airport said the evacuations were carried out without resistance from any groups in the capital. ”We haven’t had any problems with evacuation missions at all. Last night the the planes arrived, passengers were let on after checking their passports, and they departed," he told the Yemen Times.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said many other foreign nationals were not able to make it on the flights. “There were hundreds waiting and unfortunately not all of them could board, the planes were full," the source said.

Russia's Foreign Ministry thanked television channel RT for help in evacuating Americans trapped in Yemen by reporting on the issue.

Thanks to RT, the Russian Embassy in Yemen found out about the plight of Americans trapped in Yemen and helped them evacuate.

"We would like to sincerely thank television channel RT for active technical cooperation and follow-through in this move," Russian Foreign Ministry representative Alexander Lukashevich said.

The US government had no plans to evacuate its citizens from Yemen despite bombardments and fighting in the country. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Wednesday that Americans stuck in Yemen should go to other embassies to evacuate.

RT correspondents were able to find a group of American citizens stuck in Yemen and give the Russian Embassy in Sanaa information about them.

"There were no American planes at all. There were only Russian ones. Also, I would like to give big thank you to the Russian embassy for calling me and saying that there is an opportunity to leave," US citizen Rezq Ali Awad told RT.

I can't understand what the reasoning was to abandon them.
I'd like to hear the US's reason.
I am a little bit pissed about this.

how RT is the media arm of a corrupt, warmongering and homophobic regime?

Fine, kudos to them for getting people out of Yemen, and frankly shame on our government for not doing so, but at the end of the day, RT is still RT, and Putin's Russia is still Putin's Russia.

Although other countries, including China and India, have conducted large-scale evacuations of their citizens from Yemen, the U.S. has not done so, citing security concerns. “Designating an evacuation point for a large group of U.S. citizens has the potential to put those individuals’ safety and security at risk,” a State Department official said in a statement.

I tend to agree it's because they're Yemeni-Americans.
