First of all - anyone who watched the interview knows that the comments about his political position were made almost in passing. There was very little focus on it at all. I seriously doubt that he is a politically active person. I would be surprised if he actually votes.
Secondly, I have a personal anecdote as to why I think it's good: I have a friend who I have known literally my whole life. She's a right-wing nutbag. I hate that about her. She goes on tirades about Obama being a socialist, blah, blah, blah. After Jenner's interview, she posted something on Facebook like this: "Good for him! I hope he finds happiness and is able to be himself!" Some of her RW friends literally replied with, "I think it's disgusting!!" She replied that we should have compassion and have no idea what it's like to live life with that kind of struggle, etc. It was really touching for me. I honestly don't think she would have done that if he'd declared he's a raging liberal.
As others have pointed out, LGBT are three-dimensional human beings entitled to their own thoughts and ideas. I agree 100%. But I am actually glad that Jenner literally *is* opening hearts and minds. Not all of them, but I saw it for myself and it gave me hope.
Look, I know a lot of LGB... but, like many others, my experience with T is rather limited. If Jenner sharing his story helps us ALL gain a better understanding, yay! He's giving a voice and a face to the issue and if he can help destigmatize, hooray. He seemed sincere, he seems like a good person and I wish him the best.
Is it disappointing he's a Republican? Yes. But not because of his situation, but because I wish EVERYONE was liberal.
Anyway, that's my take on it.
Carry on.

(14,449 posts)The support of transgender community would rise. Not a ton but would rise. Heck look at gay marriage it has risen a lot in both parties in a short time. Most look at Crazy Cruz as the Republican Party and he is a minority within the party. Most Republicans can't stand him except for extreme tea party.

(109,020 posts)a large group of people won't be able to dismiss him as "other" who would have automatically done that before. He might influence more people to see him as a person. And that will help other transgender people, just like Ellen, Rosie, Will & Grace, etc did for gay people.

(27,985 posts)had a different reaction if he had raged for twenty minutes about how Republicans suck.
Sure we would have cheered, but we already support his transition.

What My-Tee-Fine TV that would be! Just imagine the Reich-wing evangelical heads exploding everywhere.

(27,985 posts)I personally would not want to be associated with anything that might set him up for ridicule, failure or bullying. He's not a pawn in our political games.
He already has a lot on his plate.

simply can't pull off dignified.
DU'ers want to feature some dignified transgender individuals who are in the public eye?
How about Jazz Jennings?
Need a real "celebrity"?
How about Andreja Pejic?
Do DU'ers even know who Andreja is?

(27,985 posts)He's adorable and I always tell him he'd totally vote for Josiah Bartlet. He's very socially liberal but comes from old money and so stuck in thinking (R)'s are in his selfish best interest. Someday I will turn him.... though he thinks that someday he'll turn me. Heh... no.

(10,497 posts)They can accomplish more through a corporate Democratic President then they can with a Republican. Can you imagine the fights they would have had if a Republican President didn't go after Wall Street after crashing the economy?

(15,248 posts)Getting your picture on the Wheaties box is a good way to start out becoming noticed. That you can become wealthy in this condition is totally amazing. Flash forward a few years and your stepchildren with some questionable values is able to generate enough public curiosity to turn their lifestyle into a cash draw is even more amazing. So now the Wheaties box guy has found a new cash cow that just allows him to be himself. I do find it refreshing to know that this spectacle is being funded for a person who has the fundamental flaw of all Republicans and fanatics. Bruce Jenner cares exclusively about himself while being a conservative there is no other way to be. The second he suggests that some be given his solution that cannot afford it he loses all RW support.

He loves his family, warts and all... and they love him, warts and all. Kris has been an asshole, but they were happily married for nearly 25 years. His kids have been very supportive.

(392 posts)He became absolutely giddy during the interview when he began rambling on about the irony of he having been the real story all along, the real curiosity in his freakshow family, and not Kim and the other girls. And, his comment about being a Republican because he supports the constitution, well that just proved he is a brainless twit.
Jenner's gender identity is irrelevant to me because he is first and foremost a horse's ass!

(15,248 posts)I would rather not even look at that in passing. Others in the reality show genre must be having fits of jealousy at the Kardashian renewal of the franchise.

Yay!
The problem regarding Bruce Jenners situation is the media circus that it all culminates into. Its all a freakshow for cisgender and non-transgender people.
The painful reality is that our gender identity is under speculation, suspicion, doubt, and policing. But the current curiosity surrounding Jenners interview in the non-trans community creates a magical fantasy based on a very wealthy, able-bodied, American, and white experience that isnt the case for many of us who struggle for survival and justice as transgender people of color.
snip----
Katrina Goodlett: Trans women of color are historically objectified by mainstream media with this basic narrative around genitalia and surgery. I believe this exposure could be better served towards issues that affect marginalized community; poor, disabled, incarcerated, undocumented trans people of color. We know eight trans women were brutally murdered within the first 60 days of 2015 with no media outrage or outcry, no Diane Sawyer interviews.
Alexa Vasquez: Unfortunately, this media circus makes money off of us. The way Jenner is choosing to come out and make a circus announcement is so dishonest to our community. Many will tune in to watch and begin to believe they understand, accept, and value our community based on Jenners experience. It is unfair to a movement started by women of color. Women of color have used their voices to empower and uplift a revolution based on real issues, not a mockery.

(81,550 posts)but I've gotta admit, learning that he's a self-proclaimed republi-CON actually changed my opinion of him a little.
I totally support his journey - if he feels that's truly and genuinely who he is making the transition he's making, then I support that. I know the news reporter who is now Zoey Tur. She made the transition. Used to be Bob Tur, and at times during my career I'd see him out working some of the same stories I was working. It's a brave step he's taking. Hell, it's a brave step that ANYBODY standing in those shoes undertakes. Yesterday I heard a local radio report - sidebar time! They interviewed Zoey to get the view from one who does indeed walk in those shoes. She talked about how it's actually like a death. The person you used to be is gone. Dead. Irretrievable. She talked about how final that transition is. It's the kind of transition so profound that I don't think any of us who don't face that kind of inner turmoil or questioning can fully grasp. I can't imagine having to deal with something that cataclysmic within one's own self! Then again, though, it's really not for any of us outsiders to say, one way or the other. It's none of our business, really. He's a celebrity so it kind of is, but really, this is a very personal journey HE is on.
So it's never been this chapter in Bruce Jenner's story that's bothered me. I hope EVERY individual everywhere finds his or her true path, personal truth, and hopefully, achieving one's own inner happiness and contentment in life.
But I gotta say - hearing he's a republi-CON was disappointing to me. Frankly hearing ANYBODY is a republi-CON is disappointing to me, and tends to tell me something less than good about them. I DO have a bias and a prejudice - against the GOP. I'm with you, PeaceNikki. I wish EVERYBODY was a liberal.
