COMPARE ARREST RATES
Blacks are far more likely to be arrested than people of other races, and in some places, dramatically so. Using FBI arrest records, USA TODAY found nearly 1,600 places where the disparity in arrest rates is more pronounced than in Ferguson, Mo.

(5,946 posts)I don't know where they are finding the black people to arrest, unless they are counting non white as black. now I know there was a large number of arrests of Hispanics a few years ago which can account for these arrests. There was a burglary ring and a lot of people involved. This in a town that really does not usually have more than one arrest a week and usually for driving issues. I read the police blotter, every arrest listed, that is why I can say that.

(60,212 posts)Both numbers are alarming.
Since there are only about a thousand black people here, that's... wow. Just wow.
But even more frightening in some ways is that more than 1 in 10 people and almost 3 in 20 people have been arrested.
What the fuck, Redding?

(22,336 posts)and I'm going to be asking some questions. How is that even possible?
(I realized I was pinpointing where I live so I deleted the specifics, but it was disturbing.)

(9,469 posts)that explain part of it (the rest is racism). One is poverty and living in high crime areas. Due to police patroling higher crime areas people who live there are more likely to be caught than people who live in lower crime areas. Of course, there is a direct correlation between poverty and living in higher crime neighborhoods. Additionally, poor whites are more likely to live in rural areas where there is lower police presence and statistical likelihood of being stopped/caught/cited are lower.
Second is lower home ownership rates of AAs, which means certain crimes are done in public view (like drug dealing) leading to greater arrest rates. (of course lower home ownership rates are also due to redlining, loan discrimination, etc. but that has almost been eradicated).
Poverty crimes like expired car registration, lack of vehicle insurance, broken taillights, etc. lead to arrests/citations for other crimes.
I can't remember the other legitimate factors but there are a few more. After you take all of those into account, there is a gap which can't be justified, but the arrest rates can be significantly decreased just by addressing the poverty issue.

although I did figure out how many AAs live here.
Out of a population of +/- 1300 people, exactly 1.96 are black.
Very few people actually get arrested here, actually. The majority of scanner calls are for senior citizen falls and brush fires.
