Bernie's Op-Ed in the Des Moines Register: Social Security: Expand it, don't cut it

Republicans are trying to convince voters that Social Security is in crisis. Let's not kid ourselves: We do have an urgent problem on our hands, but it's not Social Security. Millions of middle-class Americans are facing a retirement crisis as a result of inadequate income and growing wealth inequality. Social Security isn't the problem. It's an essential part of the solution.

How did this crisis develop? There was a time when traditional corporate pension plans paid a fixed income after retirement, but today only one in five working Americans has that kind of plan.

Today many households live from paycheck to paycheck, according to surveys, and more than half of all Americans have less than $10,000 in savings. How can people save for retirement under these conditions? Economists used to describe retirement security as a "three-legged stool" made up of savings, employee pensions and Social Security. With two of those legs cut off, why are some politicians sawing away at the third?]

The truth is that Social Security is a success story. Without it, nearly half of seniors, and 1 million children, would be living in poverty today. It's financially self-sufficient, forbidden by law from adding to the federal deficit, and its operating costs are far below those of private-sector retirement plans.

The baby boom from the 50s and is going to be in their 60s.

These are people employers don't want to hire. Some are going to quit work in just a few years. These are also folks about to discover the joys of their first surgery for some organ they enjoyed abusing in their youth.

Republicans HATE the idea of a "welfare state" but that's where we are headed as these folks are retiring. Republicans would like them to work until they die.

I am not going to panic. We got through the other impacts.

As to being a welfare state? What exactly is a "welfare state"? It is just a rw buzzword.

It's like the old saying goes.

Liberals don't like the idea of their tax money being spent to hurt people and conservatives don't like the idea of their tax money being spent to help people.

Good thing conservatives are a small minority in this country and always have been.

It's not difficult to talk plainly, to the issues, and in a way that gets people to BELIEVE you are going to fight for them. This undoubtedly disturbs the financial and political elite.

Most politicians talk in vague generalities that simply don't lend believability in today's political climate.

Cut to the chase. Like Bernie.

And not only that, they continue to lay waste to our environment, our natural world, the only thing that allows us to live in relative comfort.

So, a future of Wall St design consisting of much hotter summers, less fresh water, less fresh food, less biodiversity, more disease, more unrest and less social security.

It is amazing how much we have stolen from future generations in such a small time frame. Almost to the point of denying them any kind of future at all. It will be the only recalled legacy of those who labor for corporate ends today.

How could any Democrat disagree with Bernie on Social Security?

If they do disagree they are dead to me—they're little better than a filthy Republican Tea Bagger.

I have wondered so many times what people did to survive before S.S. Bernie is right on to make this a big deal issue and to show the leadership on it he always has. I hope hundreds of thousands of Iowans see this piece - that's where it all begins.
