Six and a half years ago, I voted for Barack Obama looking forward to being able to thank him for this very event. So, although I was hoping it would have come sooner, thank you, Mr. President. Just as you earned the Nobel Peace Prize, so you have earned our thanks.

(11,175 posts)Our phrase comes from the old English word "scot", meaning a form of tax. If you got away without paying the scot, you were evading a burden you should have borne.
So the phrase "scot-free" has nothing to do with people named Scott or with people from Scotland.
