Published on May 31, 2015
More than 3,700 people squeezed into a Minneapolis gym to hear presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders lay out his campaign agenda. More people were left standing outside. Upon arrival, Sanders said he would like to ask people in the gym to sit down, but there were no more chairs.

(6,009 posts)... But I'm sure they didn't run out. It is Minnesota after all, I'm sure no one would be so impolite as to take the last piece...

(9,126 posts)I was pretty surprised when he said they had run out of food. I live in California and we don't count much in the primary process so this was all news to me. I hope as his crowds get bigger--and they will--that people won't complain if they can't be fed. But it would be an awesome campaign event to feed the hungry! Getting people involved in their communities as part of the campaign would be magical.

(14,177 posts)That is what I was thinking. An event where people bring something to share with everyone. A Bernie Sanders pot luck/fund raiser.

(37,748 posts)Dependent on who I eventually support, I'll read this as either a great turnout for a dark-horse candidate, or horribly inept campaign management.

Posters playing the pretense of concern, too... which may or may not be shocking to anyone attempting to rationalize an irrational premise any further.

(9,126 posts)With thousands of people willing to sit outside just to listen is just terrible optics. And optics are all that matters. Riiiiiiiiight!

(336 posts)Jane O'Meara Sanders has been an entrepreneur in the public realm for most of her career.
As the founding Director of the Mayor's Youth Office and Department Head in the City of Burlington from 1981 through 1991, Sanders developed many programs and non-profits for children and families that still continue today. During that time, she was also active in K-12 education, elected as a School Board Commissioner, and was a founding member of the Women's Council & the Film Commission.
When her husband, Bernie Sanders, was elected to the U.S. Congress, she had the honor of serving Vermont on a volunteer basis, which she has continued to do on and off over the years.
In 1996, Sanders' focus turned to higher ed when she was appointed as Provost and Interim President of her alma mater, Goddard College, to help the college through a difficult period. The Board, faculty, staff, students and Sanders worked well together to successfully improve the accreditation, finances and governance of this progressive institution.
In 2004, Dr. Sanders became President of Burlington College, then a small commuter school. It was again a "turn-around" position, as the school had serious financial, accreditation and regulatory problems. Sanders, trustees and a dedicated community worked together to resolve the issues, significantly expand the academic degree programs, move to a new campus and become a master's level institution. An unexpected change in Board leadership and a difference in visions for the future direction of the college led to her resignation in 2011.
Sanders has also run a small business as a media and political consultant, working for independent, progressive and democratic candidates, and as an educational consultant.
Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Vermont Economic Development Authority and on the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Commission.
Dr. Sanders earned her Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy Studies at Union Institute & University.

BTW,the Star and Trib is owned by Glenn Taylor one of Minnesota's wealthiest donor's for the GOP. Lovin the Winds of Change that are a blowing.

(111,111 posts)By the way, Glenn Taylor owns Current, Inc, a greeting card company, in Colorado Springs. A lot of people, including friends of mine, were laid off. They did not have kind remarks for Mr Taylor...

(34,661 posts)Forget the Name of the Company. Changed since I last called on them. Employs some 3k mostly College Kids at minimum wage. Owns several Envelope Companies in neighboring towns. This sucker ran my Cousin out of Business when he raised his worker wages five bucks higher than the Envelope Company across the road. When you are in a plastic molding business, you need a constant Electrical Power source as well as water and other city services. Municipal Power would suddenly go away at his Building and had a shared Transformer Block with Taylor Envelope but they never had any interruption.
