http://www.ibtimes.com/obama-administration-proposes-sweeping-gun-regulations-1945483The Obama administration will propose sweeping regulations on gun ownership aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of those convicted of domestic violence and the mentally ill.
snip
The latest attempt by Obama will surely cause a rise in outrage among his opponents. The recent conspiracy theory surrounding the Jade Helm 15 training exercise was fueled by fears Obama was going to send the military to invade the state of Texas to confiscate guns. But in more than six years in office, Obama has yet to win any changes to curb gun ownership.
So this is as much about right wing paranoia as it is guns.
BTW, who could possibly be against this?

(36,063 posts)If those details promote institutionalizing irrational fear of and undue prejudice against the mentally ill, I'll oppose it.
I am not a gun-owner or a member of the NRA. I am familiar with the statistics.
I do believe the 14th amendment should still apply to everyone.

Probably half the population of the RKBA forum for starters... cause this is where it starts you see.... first they take the guns away from the mentally disturbed, next thing you know the gub'mint has defined everyone who wants to carry a gun as mentally disturbed and every law abiding citizen in the country has been disarmed while simultaneously every criminal has their hands on an arsenal and it's anarchy... ANARCHY!!!!!!!
(Or you know, something equally paranoid and fearful...)
Fred Sanders
(23,946 posts)what next, limiting personal arsenals to five weapons or less?
The NRA could not get any more paranoid, so I do not worry about their response, it will be the same response of fear, paranoia, lies, hate and terrorism of elected Representatives that is baked in like a Pavolian response.
So predictable as to be prone to be taken advance of.

Doesn't it bother you just a little to swap out your standards so casually? I mean, Jesus-- you were literally making these two arguments at the same time.

(39,171 posts)it will be interesting to see how they balance this with medical privacy laws.

Kingofalldems

(39,171 posts)they just have to take care in how they implement it. I see two potential issues - the first is a clash with mental health advocates worried about privacy and stigmatizing people with mental health issues. The notion that mentally ill people are a danger to others will be vigorously fought. The second is will it scare people away from getting treatment for mental health issues. The army is struggling with this very issue - a lot of soldier are not stepping forward for PTSD treatment because they don't want to lose their guns.
The devil is always in the details.

(26,613 posts)I posted elsewhere that I'm not sure "sweeping" is really the term for this: it looks like DOJ wants to make permanent some existing temporary rules, including the domestic violence one, modify the NFA definition of a pistol, and has expressed intent to make unspecified proposals in other areas, but thus far it doesn't seem* like there's a reason for anyone to get excited here...
Here's the list of DOJ entries in the Unified Agenda that this all appears to be based on.
* Caveat: I am not a lawyer, so perhaps I'm completely missing the gravity here.
