(WJBK) - Inkster residents are looking at a temporary one-time tax they will pay next month.

Tax payers will be charged $130 in order to help pay for the Floyd Dent lawsuit against the city.

He was was awarded a $1.4 million settlement from the city last month. A dash cam caught Inkster police officer William Melendez beating him last January.

"The situation with Mr. Dent was unfortunate. This settlement begins to put this behind us for both parties. The city of Inkster has and continues to be in fiscal distress. The only way to satisfy the judgement is by placing it on the tax rolls," says the city's treasurer, Mark Stuhldreher.

Why isn't the cops paying out of their budget? And is it a flat $130, or is it proportional by property values?

I received push back for even suggesting the Police Union (which would have represented the police men in question) pay for it.

If there's a wall of blue -hurt the wall of blue where they hit.

Regardless - this man won and he has to be paid.

Maybe this will get citizens hopped up to start putting the boot of property taxes on the necks of the police forces? I dunno - but this is a classic case of someone not being held responsible for their actions.

They'll "self-police" themselves, just as other professions do, or their rates go up and ultimately cancelled. It's the fastest way to end this Band of Thugs.
