Obama Tweets Support to Caitlyn Jenner; Hilarity Ensues

Shortly after Caitlyn Jenner’s announcement via Vanity Fair cover that she would be officially known from here on out as Caitlyn (and not Bruce), President Obama tweeted his support, saying “It takes courage to tell your story.” That’s it. Nothing to see here. Just a small, simple act of kindness from someone in a position of power. It didn’t need to be anything else.

Oh, who are we kidding? Obama can’t sneeze in public without the crazies coming out of the woodwork to ramble about how his sternutation is a herald of the end times, the death knell of America. So it was only natural that when TMZ posted a bite-sized story about Obama’s tweet on Facebook, it almost instantly became a breeding ground for a coterie (or perhaps menagerie is a better word) of knuckle-dragging, tin-hat-wearing imbeciles spouting a radically stupid slew of insane, off-color, and irreverent comments.

snip>

Well, hypothetical person who thinks way more about this article than most people probably do, to some extent you’re right. Trolls will be trolls. The protection of a computer screen does tend to bring out the obstinate moron in a lot of people, and you can find commenters arguing about jet fuel’s propensity for melting steel beams on Youtube videos of adorable cats.

On the other hand, man, you guys, some of these comments are stupid, and they speak to a larger issue with many Americans’ understandings of and relationships to politics. You may have wondered, if you are any type of reasonable human being, why Obama inspires so much hate and vitriol. He’s black, so of course, that’s some of it. Other than that, however, what’s he really done to hurt the people that seem to hate him so much (and only know how to express that hate through frothing, poorly-worded, badly spelled comments on the internet)? We’re almost seven years in and there’s no socialism to be found. Maybe it’s because he’s taking away everybody’s guns? Let’s do a quick Google search…nope, not that either. In fact, gun ownership has skyrocketed under Obama. Well…I mean…he has…large…ears?

The author addresses three comments similar to yours.

These three are all lumped together because they express the same sentiment. Somehow, by taking four seconds to express support for the most visible face in an incredibly important social movement, Obama is shirking his duties as president. His priorities are not straight. He should instead, you see, be focusing on killing more Arabs and deporting more Mexicans and locking up more black men and giving more tax breaks to rich white people. You know, the traits of all good presidents. In all seriousness, I would love to hear what these women think being president entails. Is he allowed to sleep? What about eating, or pooping? Please email me; if I ever decide to run for president I’d like to know how much free time I can expect to have, and your expert advice would be much appreciated.

The problem I have with the president tweeting is that if enough thought is not put into a tweet, a person will end up with a thoughtless tweet and that's when trouble ensues.

so much imagination to think that this tweet is in any way out of line from a sitting president. Look, I've been pretty critical of the President for a while now over what I consider to be pretty important issues. This is not one of them. These people need to find a new hobby before their clutched pearls are ripped from the string from their incessant grasping at them.

Twitter offers the advantage of just blasting something out there, without having to think about it. There seem to be some people who use this ability to blast everyone and everything. Obama is high on the hate list, of course, but I bet you would eventually find everyone they ever knew, everyone who ever had moment of fame or notice of any kind, basically anyone who ever came on their radar for any reason. I guess some of them really believe the CIA built the WTC towers with hidden explosives in the steel beams, but some of them just say stuff like that because they know it's obnoxious. Twitter is perfect for assholes, because it allows them to be so efficient, to be assholes to so many people in so short a time.

By his acknowledging Jenner's transition, it demonstrates an openness not seen in the past. Had he not said anything about Jenner, I am sure some would find fault with him. Hell, he could cancer tomorrow and some headlines would read "Obama ignores heart disease; only cures cancer!"
