Yes, I supported Hillary in 2008 and will probably vote for her in my caucus. I still think that she would have been a better president. Water under the bridge now. I did vote for Obama once he was the candidate. I wonder how many Bernie supporters would do the same if Hillary is the candidate.
But what was amazing in 2008, on DU and among Democrats country wise, was that blacks had no qualms in claiming their support for Obama because he was black. Never mind that Obama had no track record. At least, in contrast to Kerry in 2004, Obama did not have to defend his "voting for before voting against."
But women fell over each other proclaiming that just because they were women did not mean they would vote for Hillary.
Please stop this gender and or race war right now.
Oh, I know. How many Christians are not going to vote for Bernie because he is a Jew?? Heavens forbids he will have a "mixed loyalty." (I have no idea where he stands on Israel).

(2,967 posts)I support Bernie Sanders solely because I agree with his positions on the issues that are important to me, which include women's issues and social and economic justice. His gender and skin color don't matter. That he's Jewish doesn't matter. I voted twice for President Obama. The fact that he is black and I'm not made no difference to me. It would delight me to be able to cast a ballot for Sanders in the General election.
However, if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic Nominee I will vote for her without hesitation. We are fortunate to have right now several candidates I would be happy to vote for. Of those on offer for the Republican party not one is worthy to hold the office of the President of the United States, not one.
Since I live in the blood red state of South Carolina, my vote will likely not make a bit of difference, but I'll still be voting and voting Democratic.
deurbano
(2,896 posts)I also supported Clinton in 2008 (after Edwards... and the less said about that, the better!) because I thought she and Obama had virtually identical positions (I assumed he would have voted for the war, too, had he been in the Senate and harbored presidential ambitions at the time)... but Clinton seemed more ready to fight the Republicans, with no illusions about some post-partisan new world... AND she's a woman. A woman president was/is WAY overdue, and that was a significant factor to me for sure, just as it makes perfect sense to me that African Americans would consider race a factor. Even if he was not my first choice, it was incredibly moving and exciting when the first black president was sworn in...
Eight years later, the part where Obama and Clinton hold virtually identical positions is more of a problem, since I like many of those positions even less now... and I also see actual political differences between the current candidates, with Sanders better representing my perspective and interests. (I mean, he would have in 2008, too, had he been running.) But I still remember the way Clinton was treated in 2008, and not just by the right:
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/pressing-issues-by-digby-blogosphere-is.html
If she is the nominee, I will be moved and excited at the prospect of a woman president, while also worried about what lies ahead if we continue on the same path. (But WAY more worried about the prospect of a Republican in the WH again, god help us.)
question everything
(47,616 posts)including the Edwards, same for me..
I like Sanders positions but I have no illusions that most Americans do not vote their interest and will deride his "socialist" positions.
The reason why this country never had and never will have a revolution is because most do not hate the rich; they want to be rich.
Some years back a TV reporter stopped people in the street with a pie chart - don't remember the details - and most would have rather have a big piece of the pie that share it with others.
The shift from manufacturing and farm economy to a service one meant that fewer workers feel that "we are in this together" and more like "looking for number one."

(57,936 posts)and am the mother of daughters, only daughters, no sons. My great-aunts were working women before it was fashionable. My mother believed strongly in rights for women. I attended women's liberation meetings in the early 1970s and considered myself a liberated woman in the 1960s. Nevertheless, I did not overcome cultural, class and familial biases to enter the profession that was really right for me until I was 50. So I know how much prejudice against women and the idea that the woman is the housewife while the man is the bread-earner can prevent women from fulfilling their potential.

JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)once I got into my profession with great grades, I was deemed too old.
Women who raise families, work outside the home to provide for their children and then go back to school to enter a profession that is their dream discover that what gender discrimination is disguised as age discrimination and deprives them of the opportunities to earn equal pay and even to keep their jobs.
Men suffer from age discrimination too, but it is particularly unfair that women are slowed in their careers and often viewed as unable to take on the responsibility that would justify a promotion because they take care of children or elderly parents and then, when those responsibilities are no longer barriers to career advancement are told they are too old for a promotion or management position because they have too little experience compared to their male counterparts.
We women have more serious issues to deal with than stupid words that are used precisely to make it look like we are fools and do nothing but complain about nasty words (mostly inadequate men) call us.
Instead of complaining about epithets that men use to demean us, let's talk about getting the best affordable early childhood education for every single American child whose family wants it. Let's talk about real equal pay for equal work combined with equal opportunity for women. Let's talk about meaningful maternity and family leave -- paid maternity and family leave. Let's talk about better schools and after-school programs. Let's talk about good transportation for our children to and from school. Let's talk about school lunch programs for all children.
There are so many issues on which American women need action. Let's focus on the positive action we want and need, and not on the use of words we object to.
Let's stop trivializing women's issues.

I, like so many others, would love to someday see a woman president, but I'd have passed on Margret Thatcher if I were in the UK, and I feel similarly about Hillary. I have every reason to believe that Bernie respects people in general, and women more specifically and I cannot imagine that Hillary has any policy positions on women's rights that are not supported by Bernie. But as has been mentioned upthread, Bernies's economic policies would have a far greater positive impact on women's lives than those of Hillary./

(8,554 posts)than for any woman who thinks that abortion should be "rare".
As a woman who has had an abortion, more than one, and even an illegal one, way back in the day, I happen to believe that if any woman feels that she should not, cannot go thru a pregnancy, then it is that woman's right to whatever medical care that she needs. I don't think that there is anything immoral about deciding to have an abortion and I am definitely not ashamed that I've ever needed that particular procedure. When I had my abortions, it was the moral decision that I made, each and every time.
If someone looks at me with googly eyes when I call "Bullshit" on the proclamation that abortion should be rare, I tell 'em to try walking a mile in my life, having been extremely fertile, failed by birth control, raped by strangers, raped and beaten to a bloody pulp by loved ones, a single mom and always, working class.
So, while I've not even considered yet who I'll support in our Presidential Primaries, when I hear any woman pontificate on how the number of abortions should be reduced, I can only think that she should get out into the real world more and learn exactly why women need access to abortions.

(7,143 posts)It's a given that the posters on this site support Sanders, probably to a woman and a man. This poster, as you observed, started this thread in response to yours - presumably to prove a point that was somehow contrary to the one he or she assumed you made. But no one is going to aver here that she doesn't support Sanders because said person doesn't exist. And, as the OP's response to me indicates, he or she knew so, having started this "positive" thread.
The better question, in response to this thread's response to you, is which women don't support Sanders. That's why I asked it - to give women an opportunity to weigh in elsewhere. I expected no responses. And even though my question was in no way provocative, the thread was met with bile.
Neither thread is meant to take the pulse of women here. And both threads proved that.
BTW, I didn't single out women. You might ask the OP why he or she did.

(35 posts)...or minorities. As I female I think he'd do right by me. All women want is to be treated fairly, to not have the cards stacked against them from the get-go. If the candidate standing up for our rights is male, fine. His economic ideas sound like the makings of a more equitable world. My only worry would apply to any candidate, male or female, white or minority: Republicans' actions during the Obama presidency have shown that they will stifle any progress and continue to drag this country backwards. I believe Prez O was and is a great president. But how much can ANY good president really help the American people when the Republican obstructionists want so desperately to transform America, for men and women both, into 3rd world hell scape? Women and minorities are universally oppressed in Republitopia. The seeming inability one person, even if it is The Leader Of The Free World, to protect us, seems almost inevitable now. All our rights are being taken away a state at a time, a Hobby Lobby employer at a time. What can any president do to help us protect out bodily sovereignty, when basically the same "States Rights" idea that Conservatives said gave them the right to keep slavery, they are now using to oppress women? A state at a time our rights are chipped away, and not protected by the federal system. Even the Supreme Court has stood against women, against 51% of America.
Do I feel Bernie Sanders stands for women? Yes. Do I think he can or will help us? Not really, but the same would go for Hillary or any other Democrat. Not unless they feel like starting a civil war to protect female Americans from oppression. Because Republicans will not stop until we have no rights at all.
beam me up scottie
(57,349 posts)I agree, the legislation passed to restrict reproductive rights is draconian. It's not like we haven't been fighting, we have - tooth and nail, but it doesn't matter. They are slowly taking away our freedom to choose if and when we have children. If you're a rich woman you'll be fine, birth control and private doctors are always going to be available. It's the poor and middle class women who will have to live without adequate health care. And die because of the lack of it.
It is a war and it has to stop.

But I hasten to add that should Hillary be crowned the Democrat's candidate, I would certainly vote for her over ANY of the clown-car brigade! I hope we can listen to Bernie and not let the MSM decide for us who should be our candidate. Bernie speaks to and for America. He's a good guy with good ideas. I feel like there's a groundswell, and the potential of a major shift towards Bernie. But it's a David vs Goliath thing, with Goliath having mucho-mega money. Can the people wake up, speak up,and turn the tide? Oh god, I wish we could.

Yeah, the gender argument swings both ways, I'm sure Carly will ask all women to support her too, and expect us to fall in.
Nope, never.

(7,768 posts)I seem to recall the first I heard of Bernie was when he was a guest on 'Air America' with Al Franken. I sat up and took notice!
Back in the day, I also listened to KTPK AM 1090 out of Seattle. Tom Hartman would have Bernie on his show on Fridays. I tried to never miss that show. Got introduced to Ron Reagan, Ed Shultz, Randi, Stephanie, Norman Goldman and others. I loved them all. Either XM or am 1090 was always on in my truck!
Then, the catastrophe happened. I think it was parent CBS that changed the format to another fucking sports station (as if there were not enough already).

As a woman I would never vote for a woman just because she's a woman if her past economic policies and foreign war mongering hurt women.

As a middle class white woman with economic security, I see that having poor people suffer so is the greater evil. It is heartbreaking that parents have barely enough to provide a decent life for their children, and they work too hard and too long hours to be the kind of parents they want to be.
Also Bernie Sanders did not vote for the Iraq War like Hillary Clinton did. I have a moral problem with her vote since nearly a million people died in that war. He takes the high road and doesn't personally attack people he is running against, but he rips on the billionaires and their interests mercilessly. I like that, and I want to hear more of it. He doesn't give a shit about image, or getting money from big donors, and he's held the same positions for years. I like that. I want more of that. I don't know what he will actually be able to do as president, and it's the people, not the politicians that really bring about the change, but I'm glad that someone seriously running for a major office is finally saying things I want to hear, for what it's worth. I loved seeing that journalist squirm when Bernie unflinchingly talked about a top 90% tax rate. This is what I want to hear from someone running for office.

(65,556 posts)banks, and even though I cringe at many of the choices she has made while holding up her finger to test the direction of the political winds, I also admire her in many ways, and I will of course vote for her if she is our nominee.
But I think Bernie's run is our best hope for forcing discussion of the real issues--and for pushing the Democratic leadership back toward our party's actual principles. In terms of adherence to the supposed principles of the Democratic Party, he is the only true Democrat running right now, even though he isn't officially a Democrat.
I do have a problem, though, with the idea of Bernie as our nominee and as president--well, not with Bernie, but with the country and with the way our political system works. Both the Repubs and the Dems did everything they could to kneecap Carter when he was president, because they saw him as an outsider, and they did prevent him from being effective in office. Bernie, despite his years in Congress, is also an "outsider." He doesn't toe the line or play ball with the corporate sellouts in both parties, so I worry that even if he does get the nomination, the Democratic Party's powerful establishment will not support him adequately in the election, and that even if he wins the office, neither party will work with him to enact his agenda.
The Republican Party has deliberately undercut Obama, but he hasn't gotten all that much help from most of the Dems in Congress, either. I am impressed that he has managed to accomplish as much as he has while facing such outrageous obstructionism, but without the support of either the Republicans or many of the Democrats, he hasn't been able to accomplish as much as we hoped he would.
I think that if the American people who wanted more progressive policies had realized that they have more to do than just voting in presidential elections, then Obama would have had many more policy successes, and his successes would have been much more progressive than they have been. Our chance to get universal, single-payer health care, for example, was screwed up by people like Max Baucus, Joe Lieberman, and Nebraska's Ben Nelson, holdouts who were supposedly on our side. Despite the claims made by so many since then, Obama never did have a true 60-vote majority in the Senate--not just because of Kennedy's illness, but also because of the delay in seating Franken and because of the destructive behavior of corporatist Dems like Baucus, Lieberman, and Nelson. But if there were more Democrats in the House and Senate, then the Republicans would be less able to obstruct progressive policies that the American people overwhelmingly support.
Unfortunately, Dems and liberals in general just don't bother to mobilize or turn out for midterm elections, so the Repubs not only captured Congress in 2010, and then the Senate last year, but also a lot of state legislatures and governorships. That gave them the power to gerrymander districts to ensure that they win more seats even when the Dems win a lot more votes, and it also has enabled them to enact all sorts of voter suppression laws to cheat us in future elections, as well as enacting the far right's anti-woman, anti-immigrant, and anti-minority agenda.
If Bernie wins, we have to have his back, in a way that liberal voters have not had Obama's back--and did not have Carter's back. We need to mobilize voters to put Dems in the House and Senate, in governorships, and in state legislatures, both in 2016 and also in 2018!
AND we have to pressure officeholders the way the Republicans do. The Republican base makes noise; Republican voters don't allow their elected officials to ignore or insult them.
Although there are far more people in this country who want progressive policies, most of them don't bother to do anything but vote for president every four years. That simply has to change, because if it doesn't, even electing Bernie isn't going to do much for us.

Husband and I both support Sanders, are contributing to the campaign, and look forward to getting involved when things get up and running here in Nevada. Husband is changing his registration for IND to DEM so he can vote Sanders in the primary.
We support him because not only do his ideas align perfectly with our own, but also: he is the only candidate even talking about the real issues we face.
There is a side note to this for me: I WILL vote for the Democrat, no matter who it is, in the general. But I seriously wonder, if we cannot make a strong showing in the house and senate, how willing the Republicans are going to be to work with a woman if Hillary were to win. It's just something I'm concerned about. Look how the right (including those in Congress) have treated a man (barely if at all left of center, friend of corporations) merely because he is only half white. How will they cope with a woman in the top spot?
As I said, if she is the Dem in the general, she has our votes. We do not vote for Republicans or third-party spoilers. I just think that perhaps there would be just as much negative backlash and obstructionism against a woman prez as there has been against Obama.
YMMV, these are just the late night ramblings of a woman of a certain age.
