#5. Wait For One Of Them To Break The Law, Then Talk Only About That
C) To get the majority's attention, the group with the complaint will gather in large numbers to chant and block traffic, etc. This forces the media to cover the demonstration (since huge, loud groups of people make for good photos and video) and cover the issue in the process (since part of covering the protest involves explaining what is being protested). In America we've seen this tactic used by everyone from impoverished war veterans, to women seeking the right to vote, to the protests about police violence you're seeing all over the news right now.

(2,841 posts)The first two are regular traffic issues that rarely affect the interstate highway. Same with ducks crossing (I've never seen ducks cross a six lane interstate highway). And even in the first situation, emergency vehicles know ahead of time when traffic is building up and avoid that route to travel on another one. People walking on the highway and blocking it is sudden and IS an inconvenience to motorists and also dangerous for the motorists and protestors.
Sorry but there's a reason why protesting on highways wasn't included in the OP's article; because it's a stupid assed tactic that accomplishes nothing.

As for the above picture. Ducks are not smart enough to stay off the road, and I guess some protestors are not smart enough either.

(5,417 posts)People need to get to work, or wherever else they are going.
Also, who do you think blocking traffic hurts the most? I'm on salary, I get paid the same if I show up late, and there are very few people to yell at me if I'm late as well.
Somebody who is an hourly employee might not lose out on an hour of pay (or have to take the day off and get written up), if they do not show up to work.

(7,107 posts)I live in a very conservative bible belt area.
People here protest abortion, Obama, teaching evolution and other crazy shit.
Not every protest is worthwhile.
Some protests just use stupid tactics. I admire PETA's efforts to make factory farms more humane, but am quick to say their tactics are fucking stupid and counter productive.
Blocking interstates and burning drug stores is also fucking stupid.

(32,763 posts)Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
They use the fear of Socialism to sneak Fascism in the back door.
