It strikes me that cops have this attitude that they deserve to "go home" more than the average member of the public. Since there are 5 occupations between cop and trucker, I'm wondering if I can get that attitude shifted my way!

Not only is being a cop NOT all that dangerous, it is even less so because they are armed to the teeth and carry radios with which to call similarly equipped individuals.

The best I can manage is to suck on a piece of damp cloth.

I could see where a cop perceives they are more in danger.

The other jobs involve the likelihood of accidents happening. With the cop in fact it's probably more likely that if killed, it would be due to an accident rather than some shoot out with criminals. Still due to the job it is likely to be on their minds. They need perception training.
