US House of Representatives Ready to Vote on TAA/TPA Friday

GOP to hold trade vote Friday

by Scott Wong, The Hill

Leaders late last night began putting the gears in motion to give them the option of taking up Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) by the end of the week.

The Rules Committee late Tuesday night posted TPA and three related trade bills on its website, where they can be read by the public. The influential panel, which decides how bills are brought to the floor, will take up the trade package at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The legislation also reflects a deal by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to resolve some outstanding issues over offsets for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). The pair huddled in the Capitol on Tuesday.

As part of the agreement, Republicans agreed to scrap the Medicare sequester offset, which Democrats objected to.

New offsets would find savings from cracking down on fraudulent claims against tax credits used for higher education and increasing penalties on businesses that fail to file correct 1099 information returns.

1. Removing the Medicare funding offset gets rid of a major issue for some. Thanks for posting this.

Cracking down on the 1099 filings will close a major way people -- including rich and some not so well-to-do -- avoid paying income tax.

2. Oh, for me, the Medicare thing was just a small part of the overall putrid mess.

Well, I wonder if I will be (probably temporarily) relieved when they vote - or will I just have a convenient list of corporate politicians I will never vote for again?
If it fails, I imagine Jamie Dimon will start calling people.

3. I agree, but TPP opponents made a big deal about it even though it wouldn't have started until 2024

Same kind of fuss they made against the ISDS, as if it were some brand new idea developed by corporatists, not the UN and WTO.

4. Oh, are the people who will need Medicare in 10 or 11 years not worth bothering about?

Interesting take on it. And maybe the whole Medicare things was just a feint, put in so it could be taken out so as to lull people who are not paying attention to the big picture.

5. $450 Million in Medicare is nothing, and would have been removed down the road with other budget

finagling. Heck, Elizabeth Warren has expressed support for removing the 2.5% tax on medical devices used to help finance the ACA. Why did she do that? Because there are a bunch of medical device companies in her state that whined, and she caved.

Besides, I use Medicare and used to work for Medicaid (my best job ever), so it directly impacts me, and interests me. The offset was just BS that wouldn't have changed Medicare in any practical manner.

6. And the offset was just a distraction from the corporate giveaways.
