(45,851 posts)I'm going to withhold judgement for now until we learn a bit more.

(2,792 posts)Unfortunately, people remember the original statements and not the corrections.
Given her age, suspending her is probably moot.

(65,616 posts)However this was staged by someone in the back office.

(22,336 posts)That's about as bad as I can imagine. If I were her boss, she'd be on probation anyway. No way do you make an assumption like that based on a Facebook comment, and run with it without doing some homework.

(41,218 posts)Arab American, Christian according to Wiki. To handle a senior US Senator and statesman who is running for the highest office in the country that way is inexcusable- stating that he was an Israeli citizen, and not asking, and then haranguing him about 'any other Israeli Congressmen'? It might be deliberate or others who say she was not her usual self at all, raises more concern about competence. The apology is pointless, damage has been done now. The radio program went to over 200 US NPR affiliates, NPR World News and the Armed Forces Radio. Ms. Rehm must resign, immediately.

(135,425 posts)I don't know what her 'lean' is.
She sounds like she has had a stroke. That can impact information processing.
Brian Williams made a LOT of stuff up.
Is this a first offense or does she have a record of being combative and rude?
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)and her shows are usually very well done. Very respectful and fair.
She has a voice condition that impacts her speech but her mind is very, very sharp.
I'm really surprised about this.
Glad she apologized.

Diane Rehm is listed along with others who have the condition including Bobby Kennedy, Jr.

(43,049 posts)generally does not suffer fools lightly. Especially fools on the right.
I'm not sure what happened here, but the tragedy would be for most people to have this as their first introduction to her, destroying her while taking a shot at Bernie.
Propagandists see this as a twofer-- take a shot at Bernie and bring down a nominally liberal voice.
I forget what her voice problem is, but I don't believe it's stroke related and she gets regular treatments for it

We used to celebrate liberal Democrats making headway in Rethug industries.
Diane Rehm is one of us, a liberal Dem in toxic Radio-land. One of the last liberal Dems left on radio and maybe one of the most influential ones.

(1,488 posts)So what? It doesn't mean she should have a show or that I should automatically enjoy it.
What if she had a huge stutter? Should we continue to let that prime media spot be filled by someone who can't do the job at the peak of performance?
At some point she should have stepped aside and let a protégé take over.

(42,777 posts)I strongly doubt Rehm would ever say that. Even if that was the case.

(17,635 posts)I don't think we can afford to drop someone like Rehm on a single incident.
That said, it sounds like a very serious error and maybe NPR should do a little more oversight /editing. Or something. (not sure how it works with a show like hers.)
The thing that bothers me is that it is so obviously an inflammatory statement, that you would think she would have been damned sure she checked against a reputable source before using that line. I don't think she should have even "asked" Sanders as her apology said. If she even thought that, she should have checked before the show. Dual citizenship is a huge BFD in a presidential race.

(41,218 posts)Forget the apology, the program went to over 200 US NPR stations, Sirius XM, NPR Worldwide and the Armed Forces channel. Who will remember the 'apology'? Completely disrespectful, incompetent, irresponsible and maybe deliberate. Must resign. In the radio business since 1973 and at 78 she's has a very long career.

(8,631 posts)But I haven't listened to her in quite a while since my schedule changed. She should have known better than to do this, though. She quoted a facebook post as if it were fact.
Ms. Toad
(34,137 posts)Over the past few years I have watched her ability to do her job as magnificently as she used to decline. At least once a show now I find myself yelling at the radio, "You completely missed the point."
This incident may make it more apparent, but it is a symptom that it is time for her to think about what is in the best interests of NPR and her listeners, not an isolated cause for which she should be suspended.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)Questions or accusations that smack of "Are you now or have you ever been a communist" should get someone fired. If she is a liberal as many people say she is they should know better than one to accuse, second to accuse someone of a dual citizenship. It shouldn't have been an issue in the first place, if she read it on facebook her reaction should have been who the fuck cares. If she wanted Bernie to know that was going around on facebook and whatever she could have mentioned it without putting it as an accusation.
