Do you know how your representative will vote on fast track tomorrow?
Have you called to find out?
I would love to hear from all the great people here who have been writing and calling and participating and doing their civic duty. I hope that a lot of you have been assured that your rep will oppose fast track. If your advocacy hasn't been met with such an assurance, I would be really interested to hear about your experience too.
My rep, a Democrat, has been unambiguous in his opposition to fast track.
But if you have been sitting this one out, or if you support fast track, explain it to me one more time.
Occasionally I attend meetings of a local progressive coalition. Most of the members are gentlemen in their 70s and 80s. I really love these guys, and they've been activists only about a decade short of twice as long as I've been alive, if you can follow that. I really respect them and adore them.
I remember when I first started bringing them articles about the TPP. I couldn't understand why the issue wasn't on their agenda. And I remember when one of them asked me, "If President Obama supports it, how can it be this bad?" I told him that was a really outstanding question.
Each time I attended one of their meetings, I would bring materials and we would discuss the TPP and the fast track process. And the gentleman kept asking that question, but his tone changed. The first time he asked it, his tone was trusting and kind of sweet. The last time I heard him ask, he was pissed, and the phrasing did change too: "If it is this bad, how can President Obama support it?"
He is still a good Democratic.
I think, now, he's an even better Democrat.
I've seen the White House PR team's infograohic with the little check marks next to labor protections and environmental protections. I've heard that Elizabeth Warren is lying to me. I understand we are in a global economy.
And I've read leaked text, and I understand how fast track works, and I know who is sitting at the table and who is not.
So, yes, I want to know, do you know how your rep is voting tomorrow? And if you don't, why not?

(35,015 posts)I wish I could say that my Representative will vote NO tomorrow, but I can't. Joaquin Castro is one of the 10 undecideds and has expressed his concerns over TPP but hasn't committed one way or the other. I have called and written to him but haven't had the opportunity to speak with him in person.
His constituency are deeply connected to trade and the unions have told him exactly what they think and how they expect him to vote. On the other hand, his brother is in Obama's cabinet, so I'm sure he's getting pressure to vote Yea from that side.
I'll just have to wait and see because Castro isn't saying. I'm not very happy about that at all.
Thanks so much. That must be so frustrating, but you made your concerns known.
Tomorrow will be a long day.
Very strange politics with this all the way around; I hope there's some soul searching going on and our lawmakers end up doing the right thing.
