Retired Tampa police Chief Jane Castor this week switched her voter registration from Republican to Democrat, a move sure to make Democratic politicos salivate at the thought of her becoming a political candidate.

"The change in the Republican Party," she said. "I believe everyone should be treated fairly, everyone and their diversity should be embraced. The Republican Party has gotten further and further away from that."

While law officers tend to be conservative, Castor said she also saw people who were victims of inequality, sometimes in terrible circumstances through no fault of their own.
