Scott Walker Is Undermining Academic Freedom at the University of WisconsinBy Nancy Kendall at the New Republic

"SNIP...............
The University of Wisconsin (UW) system could, within the month, no longer have a nationally recognized tenure system.
Recently Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and the legislatures Joint Finance Committee announced a plan to slash state spending on education in the 2015-2017 budget (UW System will receive a $250 million cut) and modify the state laws on tenure and shared governance.
Walker has said that the proposed tenure changes will provide more autonomy for the UW systems Board of Regents (the governing body that oversees the UW system) and for chancellors to manage the cuts. It would do so by allowing tenured faculty to be laid off at the discretion of the chancellors and Board of Regents.
As a faculty member at UW-Madison, I am heartbroken that my state government has seemingly decided to undermine, instead of prioritizing, the K-16 education system.

(1,571 posts)UW Madison gutted by the likes of Scott Walker...I shake my head. It requires a breath taking level of ignorance to attack humanity at the site of its highest expression, its centers of learning. It requires a debased culture to allow it to happen. There comes a time when everyone needs to put down their books and take to the street. Everyone. Out in the street in silence, just shut it all down, from one end of state street to the other. That radical spirit used to flow in Madison. Time to find it again.

(36,063 posts)Robin Vos is former chair of WI's ALEC, head of the WI Assembly, and apparently a disgruntled former UW reagent.
Basically he comes off as a man with a grudge against the educated liberal elites who he supposes are ruining the system. He became seriously pissed at the UW when it decided to cancel classes when Obama visited the campus, and Vos said he would remember that event when considering the university's budget request.
Petty enough? Well, if not, his apparent follow through with that promise should win over anyone who wants even more pettiness.

So, although everyone waxing negative commentary against Walker is absolutely fine by me, I would caution people from outside WI, and Wisconsinites who aren't paying very close attention, that un-aimed shots at Scotty won't help understanding politics here.
Philosophically, Walker IS NOT LEADING WI and he's not calling the shots.
A.L.E.C. and the Kochs (and a company of millionaires) are providing the philosophical leadership, and often the boilerplate. This is much like it was when both houses of the legislature were controlled by the Fitzgeralds.
