Do not 'believe' in them. UNDERSTAND them. Learn what they're saying and the evidence that supports them.

Science is not simply 'belief' that you turn on and off based on an authority figure.

The fundies tend not to be Catholic. In fact, they tend to refer to the Catholic Church as the "Whore of Babylon" and widely regard the Pope as an appendage of the devil himself.

I have been confronted by non religious people who thought that Catholics did not believe in evolution. So it's good that Francis sets the record straight.

When Frankie Photo-Op's stances on marriage and gender equality or reproductive choice are raised, all we hear is "most normal Catholics don't agree - that's just the traditional magisterium talking!".

When he makes progressive economic pronouncements that will be universally ignored even by Catholic politicians on the right (and even center), then it's "see that's what all the church really thinks!"

Either he speaks for Catholics or he doesn't.

On evolutionary acceptance, the best that can be said for Catholics is that they are a bit better than average in the US, and a very small bit better than "Mainline" Protestants. They remain however a major step behind most minority religions and the irreligious/unaffiliated.

came up with the Big Bang Theory (he was a scientist also). When people compare Catholicism with Protestant Fundamentalism of today, I laugh sometimes. It wasn't until the 80's were some American Catholic Bishops lured into the Religious Right and Republican causes. I hope Francis will help some in turning that back to the way it was when I was young.
