Classmate: Dylann Roof Did a Lot of Drugs, Made a Lot of Racist Jokes

A former high school classmate of Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof tells the Daily Beast Roof was a prescription pill abuser who “made a lot of racist jokes.”

Roof is the main suspect in Wednesday night’s Charleston church shooting that left at least nine people dead.

The classmate, John Mullins, tells the website Roof was “kind of wild” but not an outcast at the school.

“He used drugs heavily a lot,” Mullins said. “It obviously harder than marijuana. He was like a pill popper, from what I understood. Like Xanax, and stuff like that.”

...

“I never heard him say anything, but just he had that kind of Southern pride, I guess some would say. Strong conservative beliefs,” he said. “He made a lot of racist jokes, but you don’t really take them seriously like that. You don’t really think of it like that.”

But now, “the things he said were kind of not joking,” Mullins added.

Yes, South Carolina is pretty backward as states go, but the whole of the South isn't flying that flag.

Things like that; the jokes must have turned into jealousy, then the jealousy turned into rage.

Having more money to pay for lawyers or plane tickets for abortions doesn't help when people know they can get away with ruining your life. The state helps the war on women as much as it helps people get away with murder of POC. The state is enabling racists and sexists and a better economy is not a cure all.

I've come to think some people think it's worth ignoring to help court RW voters. Here of lots of people wanting to focus on economics and woo RwErs. Ain't worth it to me.

Racism or sexism as women and POC are empowered by a better standard of living.
There's just two issues I have with that- we would stay at the bottom of the economic ladder- keeping the status quo really (but with slightly more money for lawyers and plane tickets- oh yay!)
And the backlash that we women and POC have seen over the last 20-30 years.
But if I recall correctly- you have no problem with women being under compensated and never speak up in support of our reproductive rights- so again, no skin off your particular nose.

This kind of crap is DU at its worst.

It's like existing DU pissing matches get overlaid on the whole Bernie-Hillary split. I think it's really tacky for people to try to use economic justice vs. social justice. We need both. We have real foes out there--not other posters on this board.

"Racist statements" or "remarks" would seem a more appropriate description now.

Even with his terrorist attack carried out there is real denial in that kind of language, much like the phrase "playing the race card" implies that it is all a game.

This isn't a joke or a game -- innocent Americans are dead at the hand of this terrorist FFS!

41. Drug psychosis hits some people.
Thu Jun 18, 2015, 01:16 PM

People react differently. There are people who will flip into drug psychosis from something as seemingly innocuous as Tamiflu. Benzodiazepine is known to cause delirium/psychosis like symptoms for some people when withdrawn. The floxacin class of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, for example) are known to have caused acute psychotic episodes, as does weed, and even over the counter cold medicines in some few.

I think people are searching for some sort of explanation. Certainly this seems like a racist, terrorist crime, but it also seems incredibly bizarre - these types tend to hit and run. The sitting around for an hour is hard to understand.

Also it is hard to understand how someone so young could be so deeply evil - most of these types seem to be older.

But then, the choice of location seems very cold, calculating and intelligent.

Christon Scriven, a friend...who is black...told the New York Daily News...“He flat out told us he was going to do this stuff...He was looking to kill a bunch of people.” He and their other friends assumed he had been joking. “He’s weird. You don’t know when to take him seriously and when not to,” he said.

Roof’s sister, Amber...had planned to get married Sunday...(H)er fiancé, Michael Tyo, lives just three miles from where Dylann Roof was arrested Thursday in North Carolina.

Portrait of the terrorist as a young man. And I'm also wondering what color his brother-in-law-to-be is -- if his sister wasn't marrying a white man, that could be part of his motive, too.
