Police Chief Says Dylann Roof Was Taken to Burger King Shortly After Arrest

Not. The. Onion.

http://thesource.com/2015/06/21/police-chief-says-dylann-roof-was-taken-to-burger-king-shortly-after-arrest/

Late on the evening of Wednesday, June 17, a 21-year old man, Dylann Roof, sat in a prayer group with several people at Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina. An hour later, he would kill 9 of them with a handgun, because he wanted “to kill black people.” Emanuel AME is a historic, African-American icon of a church in a town with a rich Black history.

Just over 12 hours later, on Thursday morning, Roof was captured while on the run in North Carolina after authorities pulled over a Hyundai sedan which the murderous youth had apparently piloted out of town. The FBI quickly stepped in and handled Roof’s questioning after his swift arrest, but prior to that, during transport, his handling by the police was particularly peculiar. According to the account Shelby police chief Jeff Ledford gave the Charlotte Observer, Roof complained of hunger, and was treated to a meal at Burger King.
Earlier in the day, Roof had bought water and chips at a south Charlotte gas station. Now he was hungry. Police bought him food from a nearby Burger King, Ledford said.

After slaughtering 9 people in a church, Roof was arrested, strapped with a protective bulletproof vest, then treated to burgers and fries.

If only these cops had handled Freddie Gray. Or would the series of events have been different?

Now that's a Whopper!

He was being moved quickly from small jails to a facility that could handle the needs of a high profile subject. Sometimes it is quicker and easier to have a deputy swing through a drive thru for a combo meal than to adjust plans in order to get a meal from a jail cafeteria. I have made many run to restaurants near small town courthouses to grab a quick meal so that a prisoner can eat.

Please don not make a big deal of this. One BK whopper is not going to be a treat for a guy who will spend his last day on earth in a prison cell.

It's not that these cops shouldn't have fed this "suspect." It's that every citizen, black or white, should be treated in this way until brought to justice in a court of law. Not shot on the spot, choked to death, or subjected to fatal spinal injury before being charged or tried before a jury of their peers.

Police are not judges and juries. Treatment by police is undoubtedly unequal in many parts of this country and in numerous instances.

That is the outrage: not that this one prisoner got a Burger King.

of what this animal did, IF the person was captured, I can bet he would not have been fed for many hours, had a bullets proof vest on and be treated civilly or gently by the police as this POS was/is. NO DOUBT in my experience with american justice..... Given the last three years of watching american justice meted out to UNARMED AA men, women and children, this is white privilege at it's gentlest and finest. He was armed when captured.. Rather than disparity, it's a matter of how the schedule is stacking up, what's convenient, and other factors. Who pays for this? It's usually the cop him/herself.

I recently read this book called The Job by Steve Osborn, a former NYC cop who wrote a book about his experience as an officer. Later Osborn went on "The Moth" and became popular all over the United States, even with liberals. Actually, especially with liberals, but that's beside the point.

He explains in the book that cops often do buy a burger or hot dog for the prisoner. In fact, in this book, one chapter is called "hotdog."

They do this for a variety of reasons, many of which are explained upthread by the posters who say this is not unusual. Sometimes, for example, the way the day is stacking up, the prisoner might have to wait for a long time to get a meal. This means the cop has to wait a long time, too. And maybe, just maybe, the cop would like to get home or off duty at the time he or she is supposed to. That is just one reason a cop might buy a prisoner a meal.

Also, in the book, it did not matter what ethnicity or race the prisoner was.

The cop is responsible for that prisoner clear through the collar to booking.

People on this thread act like the cop should take personal affront to Roof and begin early punishment by letting him go hungry. Well, to that I would say, the system has some standards and that is not one of them.

Furthermore, cops learn early to build a wall around their own personal feelings about what perpetrators do. They have to do this to protect themselves and stay on the job.

before dinner, for so many cops, those unarmed black kids could get burgers too. I guess it's just how the schedule stacks.

We'll never know, though, will we? That is the point you and others in this thread seem to be missing.

There are plenty of complaints about police that are legitimate. You don't need to exaggerate and make a case out of something that's not true.

This is the type of histrionics that costs liberals credibility. Get a grip; you're not helping the cause.

Mon Jun 22, 2015, 04:01 PM
Jun 2015
"It's normal to feed someone if they will be questioned and ask for food. If we are just booking them without questioning, they can wait until chow time. If chow hall doesn't have food ready, getting it outside is normal. If perp is questioned while hungry his lawyer can claim torture or abuse later. We feed them to prevent problems. Makes them more cooperative too."

He figured that it was about Roof, and went on to explain that the police also tend to be extra careful with high profile suspects, crossing every T and dotting every I, because no officer wants to be the one who does something that might violate one of his rights or be used to get him off later. He speculated that it was probably just ass covering to show that he was treated well and to keep his lawyers from challenging the questioning later.

He shot a bunch off innocent people at 9 pm. This wasn't a meal, it was a midnight snack, and he didn't need it and certainly didn't deserve it. Everyone knows no black teenager who shot nine innocent white people at a historic white church would have gotten a god damn hamburger. He probably wouldn't even have been alive at that point.

Such bullshit.

Mon Jun 22, 2015, 07:43 PM

Ellenboro. Our post office back then (1975/76) was a small office trailer like you see on big construction sites.

Hell, my son got arrested last month for driving on a suspended license. He didn't even know it was suspended! We got the notice from the DMV 3 days later. Anyways, he had just cooked himself 2 hamburgers when my daughter asked him to run her to the store right quick. It's 3 miles from my house to the closest "corner store", so he put his burgers in the microwave for a few while he took her. After he got arrested, he told the officer "Damn Billy, I just cooked me some dinner and didn't even get to eat yet and I'm starving!" We live in a real small town and we're on first name basis with all the cops. Billy stopped at the Hardee's in town before they got to the jail and bought my son a bacon cheeseburger and some fries. They feed the inmates at 8am, noon and between 4 & 5pm. If they want anything after that, they have to have already gotten commissary. Billy knew my son wouldn't get anything to eat at the jail, so he did a solid and fed him.

I can't speak as to the reason the officer did this for Roof, I just know that it isn't uncommon in small towns...

Ghost

There's a number of reasons to do this--encourage confessions, encourage cooperation, forestall charges of abuse in a high-profile case.

It's entirely possible that the cops who did this were under orders from higher up detectives and whatnot to keep that psycho calm and happy until he was safely locked up.

But can't we accept such things are not extended to a lot of arrested subjects?

I mean, you get arrested the night before, and you haven't had dinner, they're not going to go out of their way to feed you before jail and you won't get a meal, maybe a bottle of water, until the next day.

People seem to be acting as if this is normal, it's not, for a lot of arrested subjects. They just make them be hungry until they are booked and until the next meal time comes around. Maybe, maybe a bag of chips and a coke from the vending machine just from a sympathetic cop on his own dime (generally to get a confession and to play the good cop, even).

People act as if this is some kind of life and death situation where a young man, a mass murderer, just can't be denied his right to a full stomach.

It happens all the fucking time. To petty criminals no less.

I am against the death penalty, but I reserve the right to not give a fuck if a given someone gets it (ie I won't extend effort to defend them). This is one of those cases. If he gets it I wouldn't be surprised if he orders Burger King.

I concede the fucker could've been talking and they wanted to make sure that he kept talking so they kept him fat and happy, it just disgusts me that we're not recognizing that a lot of people aren't treated this way.

d ifferently. the average prisoner isn't going to get a treat.....and will generally have to wait until the next meal time and even then isn't guaranteed sustenance.

I generally decline to second-guess police in situations like this to me Burger King doesnt shock the conscience killing Freddy gray in the back of the van does.

Small jails, in particular, can't afford to hire a cook and kitchen staff. When I was working for a small town department there was a contract with a local restaurant to provide meals and the prisoners got menus to order off of.
