White supremacist campaign donations: How did Republicans not know? (+video)/CSM

No wonder the RNC is jumping on the bandwagon to remove the flag.

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2015/0622/White-supremacist-campaign-donations-How-did-Republicans-not-know-video

Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Rick Santorum all got donations from Earl Holt III, head of a white supremacist group that appeared to inspire Dylann Roof.

Washington — Why didn’t Ted Cruz (or Rand Paul or Rick Santorum) know that campaign donor Earl Holt III is the president of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a white supremacist organization?

That is one of many questions, following the revelation that all three Republican candidates for president – and many other GOP politicians, dating back at least to 2004 – accepted donations from Mr. Holt. The British newspaper the Guardian broke the story Sunday.

Holt’s racist writings came to light following last week’s massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. The alleged shooter, Dylann Roof, was apparently influenced by Holt. A website registered to Mr. Roof contained a manifesto crediting the Council of Conservative Citizens for the author’s knowledge of “brutal black-on-white murders.”

Which goes back to the donations – and how the Republican Party, already struggling to attract minority voters, can overcome this public-relations blow.

I would never assume ignorance when outright hatred is also a plausible explanation.

in the era of super pacs and multi thousands of dollars coming into a campaign, a few thousand are easy to miss

That said, this "nice group" of ahem "upstanding citizens" has been donating to candidates before citizens united. But CU created quite a bit of denial...

You asked, you got an answer. And I am willing to bet that will be the core of any denial email to media from any of these people's media contact, because this will not be even handled at the campaign manager level.

This is a high-profile group in the right wing world. They don't just send in a check . . .they make sure the campaign knows where the money is coming from and the number of votes the group can deliver. . . .and a nice signed thank you note from the candidate will be in the mail.

I would imagine most donations are not screened. The donation comes in, and a form letter thanking them is sent out. I would imagine more screening is done before they visit a house for a fundraiser, but I don't think canadiates put much thought into online donations.
