I hope its supporters are the very first to take a bite, and I hope it's a big one. Candidates included.
I almost feel guilty saying this given that I live in a valley 5,500 feet above the nearest Interstate highway 100 miles east of L.A. that has a permanent population of around 13,000 with ZERO industry/manufacturing.
Still, I'm casting my lot with Richard Trumka on this one.

I hope they got enough pressure and primary threats that they will sustain the filibuster tomorrow and the Fast Track dies.

(2,169 posts)Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) is a federal program of the United States government to act as a way to reduce the damaging impact of imports felt by certain sectors of the U.S. economy.
What could possibly be wrong with selling out US jobs to .40 cent an hour wages and then printing up more money to then give to those who lost their jobs in the first place? Of course this "assistance" won't last forever, and then the job loser can apply to a Bank to trade tax free derivatives. Or, if less fortunate, can always go flip McDonalds burgers.
Enabling companies to move $30/hour jobs to countries with $.60/hour wages so a few billionaires can pocket the difference is not trade.
By Wednesday night- the TPP will join NAFTA as another proud Democratic accomplishment. Next thing you know a Democrat will propose that we all must buy corporate health insurance with $5000 deductibles and without a public option.

It'll get litigated, and every entity with a vote and an axe to grind against the US will vote against US interests... then we'll have Foxconn housing Chinese Nationals behind fences and building cellphones in the US.

(24,853 posts)The "American Public" weren't slaves, Slick, and taking slavery away from them was a sandwich I would have gladly shoved down their throat before ASKING them to eat it.
The end of slavery wasn't done in private and in secret... or did you miss that?
I'm descended from a tribe whose members were forced to march from the southeast to Oklahoma. My Great-Grandparents were Toolie Catron and Hester Flute Catron. Look them up on the Dawes Rolls, then fuck your opinion of my privilege.
Trumka? Right or wrong... Call it in the air. Heads Obama wins, tails we (the American Public) lose.
Personally I don't think you have the guts to say Trumka's wrong, because then I'll ask you why. Or if I'M wrong, and you DO publicly say he's wrong... go ahead and explain.

(27,247 posts)I've got a bit of Cherokee blood in my family. I also worked with some Cherokees for a while in Western Arkansas (near the Oklahoma border, along the Trail of Tears). I've also visited Tsa La Gi in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, several times, and a long time ago, my drama teacher played the part of Chief John Ross in Tsa La Gi's Trail of Tears Pageant

Slick thinks I was born to privilege LOL. Maybe I should tell him about the privilege of shitting in an outhouse at my Grandpa's Sister's house in the 70s because when He took me there She didn't have indoor plumbing yet.

(27,247 posts)It was a bus in Santa Monica, California, of all places. I don't know how it started, but I got into a conversation with some guy about the Trail of Tears, and how Andrew Jackson had signed the forced relocation order. He insisted it was Thomas Jefferson. I said, actually, it was Jackson. The guy got really steamed about that, and I thought he was going to slug me. Just then, the bus driver told us to lay off or he'd kick us off the bus. Thank goodness for cooler heads

(24,692 posts)Trumka is a force for good but no one is right 100% of the time. On Keystone, polls show that a majority of Americans backed his support for building the pipeline. Is it the right thing to do? Many, if not most, liberals have lobbied against it and want the president/congress to show 'leadership' (which is what we want politicians to practice when we disagree with what is popular in the polls).
A " target="_blank">majority of Democrats think TPP is a good idea. A majority of Americans disagree with them on TPP just as they did on Keystone. Fast track and TPP are not popular in the polls regardless of what a majority of Democrats profess. As with Keystone and 'clean coal' what Trumka supports is popular with the public. Is that the deciding factor?
I suspect most of us make up our minds on issues without checking in with any politician or other leader. That does not mean we don't recognize all the good that leader does. Are 'good' liberals required to always agree with a given leader or politician?

(6,145 posts)That's according to our own State Department.
Instead of being marginalized as a rogue state Malaysia is sitting with us at the table as partner in the TPP. Their behavior is being excused at the insistence of Republicans and the administration right now.
Why Is The U.S. Desperate To OK Slavery In Malaysia?
The provision, which bars countries that engage in slavery from being part of major trade deals with the U.S., was written by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.). At the insistence of the White House, Menendez agreed to modify his language to say that as long as a country is taking "concrete" steps toward reducing human trafficking and forced labor, it can be part of a trade deal. Under the original language, the country that would be excluded from the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership pact is Malaysia.

I think we can agree that slavery is a pretty big shit sandwich. Hopefully you aren't suggesting it's OK to take a bite because the sons and daughters belong to somebody else.

(26,549 posts)Boy, if that's so horrible, then maybe we shouldn't be rewarding the slave masters with a trade deal.
Also, might wanna check the name of that poster before trying to get into a "who was more fucked by the founding fathers" contest.

The notion that Union members or even AFL-CIO members are all involved in manufacturing industries is not really accurate. You live in a county that has over 2 million people, as large as many States and with a diverse economy. You have every right to speak about Union agendas.
