to take down the NRA. Ban them from the Capitol and the White House lawn. Wayne La Piss Ant instigates and facilitates murder with his rhetoric every time he opens his pie hole. The NRA is nothing more than a lobbying organization for guns and arms manufacturers. The People could use that kind of clout.

(41,204 posts)defense contractors, 2,000 lobbyists and RW extremists over the last 20+ years starting with Reagan. They've settled there to influence US legislation, build up their stink tanks and expand tentacles into universities like George Mason and 200 others across the US that are funded by the Kochs. It's been an ugly development to watch.

(41,204 posts)by many on the left and progressives. The corruption of DC is a real shame but perhaps it will be cleaned up in time. It's still our nation's capitol and a beautiful, vibrant city.

(135,425 posts)The governor finally responded to a shitstorm of protest and called for its removal, but that's the work of the SC legislature to actually remove the thing. And they've yet to act. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/23/us/south-carolina-confederate-flag-dylann-roof.html
Interviews suggested that Ms. Haleys rapidly evolving position on the flag was shaped by several factors: the horror of seeing the unsmiling gunman posing with it in photos; her conversations with congregants at the church; intensifying pressure from South Carolina business leaders to remove a controversial vestige of the states past; and calls from leaders of her own party, including its leading presidential contenders, urging her to take it down once and for all.
The result on Monday was a moment of political and racial drama, and a signature moment for Ms. Haley, who blended the traditional values of the South faith, family, empathy into a powerful call for taking down the flag as a gesture of unity, healing and renewal.
She acknowledged that some South Carolinians respect and revere the flag not as a racist symbol but as a way to honor ancestors. However, she added, the flag, while an integral part of our past, does not represent the future of our great state. ..... Some opposition remains within the legislature. State Senator Lee Bright, a conservative lawmaker from Spartanburg, said it was unfortunate that the flag issue was being taken up in the midst of so much grief. He said supports the flag as a symbol of the states history.
There are those of us who have ancestors that fought and spilled blood on the side of the South when they were fighting for states rights, and we dont want our ancestors relegated to the ash heaps of history, he said. Through the years, the heroes of the South have been slandered, maligned and misrepresented, and this is a further activity in that.
However, a leader of the Sons of Confederate Veterans group in South Carolina, while signaling his disappointment in the governors recommendation, said the organization which prominently features the battle flag at the State House on its website said he expected his groups members would go along with whatever decision was made.

(14,562 posts)a 2/3 vote in the legislature to remove the flag. When that fails, Haley can say "I tried"

(5,739 posts)The first amendment still applies to things you don't like. You can't selectively ban lobbyists from the capital.

(15,064 posts)It's not t just in the wind but in a hurricane of protest. If for some unexplainable reason it is not literally taken down the GOP will pay an enormous price. I just pray the gun issue is addressed. Literally.

(41,204 posts)The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond is now going by the name The American Civil War Museum and includes "union" in their website info. Don't know if changes were from the altering political and social atmosphere, the lack of funding or both. It's a beginning.

(15,064 posts)sure politicians never pass a law to prevent the ridiculous amount of killings done in a country that is supposed to be civilized. I was a member of the NRA until it became nothing more than a lobbying organization for arms merchants and a platform for Wayne La Piss Ant. The NRA is not a person. Who will lobby for the innocent dead? Who will lobby for the people who will die just because some crazy racist killer buys a gun? Free speech is also legal. The 2nd Amendment is no more important that any other Amendment. By the way. An Amendment can be amended. "That" is the law also.
