Why the 'flag' still flies in the South

President Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson took over the office.
Now, tell me, who would ever think, at that time, that the south would act
like they had won, NOT LOST, the Civil War. They continued to fly the
flag of the confederacy - even unto today. If Johnson had simply outlawed
the confederate flag, we probably would not have the racism we still
see today.
The south used to (may still do) say 'THE SOUTH WILL ARISE AGAIN'.
How can they rise AGAIN when the never did rise in the first place?
(I was born and still live in the south).

1. Do you really think that the KKK and Jim Crow was just a result of that flag?

It would have taken a lot more than banning that flag to overcome the ingrained racism of the South. White people would not have suddenly accepted black people as equals. And there was and is plenty of racism in the North even without that flag.

2. It would have lasted a while, for sure,

but without the flag to keep everyone reminded, it may not have
last even unto this day. (but then, maybe it would have?)

The flag is responsible for all the racism we see today?

What about the racism up north, which flag can we blame that on?

How incredibly naive it is for anyone to think a piece of cloth created the racist mindset. I believe you may need to look a bit deeper for the cause of racism and understand it is not exclusive to the South or any other region of the US.

Family fighting against family always ends ugly ..

Neither side truly ever "wins".. They just start a perpetual grudge that never ends, as long as the losing side refuses to believe that they really lost...or that they did not start/cause/deserve the indignities they suffered.

Everyone who fought is long-dead, but their "story" is told and retold through the generations, and anything bad that happens to the family can always be traced back to the war.

The first part of healing after a war, is when the losing side publicly states "We LOST and we are sorry for what we did", and they make amends to the winner, by becoming good citizens again.

Imagine how different Europe would be now if Germany had continued to display/idolize their Nazi "heritage/culture".. Would we EVER have allowed that to happen?
