It appears that the Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof may have been even more immersed in the online white supremacist movement than previously thought.
In an attempt to verify the authenticity of a manifesto that was uncovered Saturday morning on The Last Rhodesian, a website owned by Roof, Hatewatch ran the documents full text through Grammarly, a piece of software with plagiarism detection capabilities.
Despite the fact that only 2% of the document was identified as unoriginal by the software, a key 18-word passage in the section labeled Blacks bemoaning the alleged appropriation of white culture by the rest of the world, was identified as almost identical to a comment left on an article titled Former Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt: Sweden Belongs to the Hordes, Not the Uninteresting Ethnic Swedes by the user AryanBlood1488 at The Daily Stormer.
The Daily Stormer is a neo-Nazi website run by Andrew Anglin that both generates original content and aggregates articles from other white supremacist sites across the Internet. Its comment section is much less moderated than its peer sites and hosts a diverse community of white supremacists from across the extremist spectrum.
Notably, on another article titled No Longer Posting Council of Conservative Citizens Articles published to the Daily Stormer on the same day, AryanBlood1488 expresses his reverence for the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), a white nationalist hate group, for waking him up to black on white crime.

I saw a pic with Roof on a beach and 1488 scrawled in the sand.

White Supremacy Encryption
14 = The 14 words
"We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children"
Phrase coined by George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party
88 = H is the 8th letter of the alphabet
ergo 88 = HH = Heil Hitler

(183,057 posts)I didn't know about the pre-apartheid S. African flag or the Rhodesian flag things
I do remember hearing (haven't been able to confirm) that the Hilton Head oval bumperstickers at one point were co-opted by the white supremists. So the bumperstickers were changed to include the lighthouse. The supremiss used the HH as a way identifying each other as they travel around.
I did know about the 88 thing. One of the favorites of NASCAR (and no I am no implying a connection) switched teams and went from #8 to #88. This was about the same time that I heard about the other connection. I thought it was a strange choice
The other one is the bumperstickers of the SC actual flag -Palmetto and crescent moon - is rumored to be another way for this crowd to ID each other. I don't recall if there is a specific color combination or certain place on cars that they have adopted. The Civil War began in SC so it's a wink and nod that they still support THe CAUSE. Of course a lot of people from SC just display it to show that that is where they come from.

I did NOT know about the Hilton Head stickers. I have known about "88" for some time.

(183,057 posts)Our beach week is at Mytrle Beach so I know how much tourist junk has the Palmetto and moon on it.
The HH and the misuse of the Palmetto moon might just be something I heard many years ago. Like I said I haven't been able to confirm it. Internet searches lead to page after page of tourist junk for both.

(14,971 posts)the 1488 thing. I will be keeping my eyes peeled from now on for any use of 88 or 1488 on bumperstickers, tshirts etc.

(20,631 posts)"Earnhardt Jr. made the No. 8 one of the most beloved car numbers in NASCAR while driving under that number at Dale Earnhardt Inc. for eight seasons. He won 17 races in the car with Budweiser as the sponsor.
Earnhardt and Hendrick Motorsports tried to purchase the No. 8 from Teresa Earnhardt, the co-owner of EGR and Earnhardt Jr.'s stepmother, before Earnhardt Jr. left Dale Earnhardt Inc., now EGR, for Hendrick in 2007. But Teresa would not sell the number.
Earnhardt Jr. selected the No. 8 when he started his Sprint Cup career because his grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, used the number. Junior races under the No. 88 at Hendrick, but admits he loved the No. 8.
"I wish I never would have had to change numbers," he said. "I had to under the circumstances. I'm happy to have the opportunity to use the 88 and I hope to do a good job with it for all the guys that have used it in the past."

(183,057 posts)I was just becoming aware of the 88 thing when he made that switch. I do remember the jokes about how loyal fans (and they are really loyal) with 8 tattoos were going to have to get some more ink.
I think his stepmother said no completely out of spite.

(12,977 posts)I've just done a little googling and found other examples that can't possibly be connected with Roof. For example, there's a page calling for people to take action against a gathering of neo-Nazis in Chicago in 2010 that includes information on the organizers, one of whom has aryanblood1488 as a profile name. (http://chicago.indymedia.org/archive/newswire/display/88729/index.php)
I also found one white supremacist website using this fact to cast doubt on whether the Daily Stormer poster was really Roof. There seems to me to be no doubt that he was -- but you can be sure the extreme right will do its best to muddy the waters.
