Rep. Steve King: Who Cares About A Few Massacres When You Have All This Freedom?
(I am going to skip the pic that comes with this--definitely the stuff of bad dreams!)
Iowa Republican congresscantaloupe (this insults cantaloupes!!) Steve King had a few thoughts about Barack Obamas treasonous attack on freedom last week, when the president said the United States is pretty exceptional, and not in the good way, when it comes to mass killings, and that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. For one thing, said King on a rightwing radio show in Iowa, it does happen, sometimes, just not nearly as often as it does in the USA which was Obamas point anyway. But for another thing, we cant do anything to prevent it without making America a worser, less Americanly Exceptional Freedom Landy place:
It does happen more often in this country; were a large country, were over three hundred million people. And yes, we have a Second Amendment. And even if some of this violence could be stopped by confiscating all the guns, we have a charge, our charge is to defend freedom and liberty. We are the bastion of western civilization, and that requires us to be able to defend ourselves against tyranny. Thats the charge that our founding fathers gave us, thats in our culture, we know that, weve had to do that worldwide. And so, its a much higher calling than believing that somehow we end one event of violence.
So looky here, Mister Obama, with your plan to take all the guns, which is the only possible outcome of firearms safety regulation just like now that we have drivers licenses, the government seized and crushed all our cars. You might keep the occasional church full of black people from being shot to death, but what will you have given up? Youll have given up the ability to prevent some future act of imaginary tyranny!
Certainly the lives of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, Susie Jackson, Cynthia Hurd, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Ethel Lee Lance, Myra Thompson, and Rev. Daniel Lee Simmons, Sr. are a small price to pay for the fantasy that a determined band of patriots will be able to fight off a suddenly tyrannical government at some indeterminate point after all our institutions of law and civil society have failed.
We would like Rep. King to book a flight to Charleston so he can take the pulpit of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church to explain this simple reminder of Americas higher calling, which will surely be of much solace to the grieving families.
. . . .
And then we can all join our cold dead hands and sing God Bless America.
