I'm not hating on anyone, I am just wondering. I know Sanders is gaining support so I know it is premature to say Hillary is going to win but its just a hypothetical question.

(53,137 posts)If that were my criteria, I would never have voted Democrat. I would have been voting for the Communist Party or the Greens for decades. However, I don't see the ballot as a place to reflect myself. I vote for who will make the best president of the two parities who actually have a shot in hell. That at least has been my criteria since becoming a Democrat in 2001, as opposed to a leftist swing voter before then, when I did vote for third parties.

(10,953 posts)It is a valid question and you need to realize that a lot of people are fed up with the status quo and want someone who will fight for the masses and that is Bernie Sanders. He is a pretty straight shooter and stayed that way for years. You know what you will get with Sanders.

(10,953 posts)Living in Oklahoma, it does not matter who the Democrats run (or Republicans either), the Republican candidate will win.
I will go vote, I just don't know if I will select a Presidential candidate. It will depend upon who ends up on the ballot when the time comes. I am tired of voting for the lesser of the evils. When I voted for Obama, I believed in him. Voted for him the second time but was not as excited. Now I am very cynical about the whole process. Bernie Sanders has always been a straight shooter, consistently. Right now, he is the kind of candidate I want. I don't want anybody beholden to Corporate interests.

This next part is important: my refusal to vote for Clinton has absolutely nothing to do with my support for Senator Sanders. I consider Clinton unfit for office based upon her own history (support for invading Iraq, the Patriot Act, clubbiness with Wall Street, etc). I don't vote for parties. I vote for candidates who represent my best interests. I will never vote for Hillary Clinton.

(36,281 posts)One thing they all had in common was democrats using some form of the guilt inducing paradigm that "this election is too important to vote your conscience." Maybe next time, but never this time. I learned a long time ago that folks like you will ALWAYS have some reason to disrespect others' right to choose candidates that best represent their political interests.
I hope like hell that the Democratic Party nominates someone I can support. Clinton is unfit for office, so it won't be her.

(115,681 posts)Rather than answering my question, you make unbased accusations which is too bad. Rather than asking me something back to clarify, you accuse me of things for which you have no basis in reality, which is too bad.

(36,281 posts)The question you asked is exactly the sort of thing that the folks I described generally ask, so with nothing more to go on, perhaps I jumped to conclusions. Did you instead intend to support my sentiments? If so, I'm sorry for misconstruing your remarks.

(115,681 posts)It depends on where you are, how the overall vote will go. Always vote, even if for a local issue, and remember you don't have to vote in every race (recommendation I've given people who say if they won't vote for pres, they won't go vote at all).
I agree, wish we could get a candidate that would represent us better. My mother used to tell me she could not juggle all the issues so chose 1 for the deciding vote, women's issues, and voted who would best represent her on that.
It is discouraging that too often it comes down to vote for who will hurt you less. I'm a bit older than you, have voted every election since I could except 1 off season (non-pres) one in which our school levy failed by 11 votes and teachers were laid off, classes combined, until the next vote 6 months later in which it passed readily. It showed me that my vote is important, if even for a local issue.
But I agree, it is very discouraging to have to chose someone who you feel does not represent you so that someone who represents you less and will cause more troubles that will hurt so many.
I have been able to vote FOR someone a couple times in my life, wish it was more often. People are not as evolved socially as they are technologically and I fear how long we will last and what damage the earth will end up with.

(37,166 posts)...though at this point I'm inclined to vote in the primaries for Bernie and vote for the Democratic candidate in the general election, which will be Hillary if she wins, which at this point I think is likely. As I noted, though, we're still months away from the actual primary voting.
However, since this question repeatedly comes up and smacks of loyalty oaths, I think it's relevant to bring up this point:
In 2008 a portion of Hillary's supporters reacted poorly to her primary loss, and the term "PUMA (Party Unity My Ass)" entered our political lexicon. Thus I think it's fair to ask the countering question:
If Sanders wins the nomination, will Hillary supporters vote for him?
