US not spying on French leadership, Obama tells Hollande

Following new revelations by WikiLeaks that the NSA placed three French presidents under surveillance, US President Barack Obama reassured his French counterpart François Hollande on Wednesday that Washington had stopped spying on French leaders.

The Elysée presidential palace said the two leaders had spoken by phone about the allegations, which have caused anger and embarrassment for France and led Paris to summon the US ambassador for explanation earlier on Wednesday.

“President Obama reiterated its unequivocal commitment, first made in November 2013 after the [Edward] Snowden affair and restated during his state visit in February 2014, to stop these practices that took place in the past and which were unacceptable between allies,” Hollande’s office said in a statement.

The White House also released a statement discussing the call, saying Obama had told the French president that the US was not spying on his phone calls nor other communications.
