Shameless plug: The Outernet

The Outernet is a project using satellites to provide free updatable information to anyone on the planet.

With the purchase of the requisite components, you can now receive updated data from space:

Also Outernet is currently holding an indiegogo campaign to manufacture a smaller device here:

You can reserve one for yourself, like I did, by contributing $149 now. I figure it will be worth it to never pay for the internet again.

I have been reading about the Raspberry Pi and wondered what applications it would be useful for in the future - this is an awesome idea. Hopefully - a disruptor. On a level with Elon Musk's plan to put small satellites around the world, free or cheap internet for everyone.

The upside is, with the right components (available on Outernet's website), you can set one up right now and use it.

However, I think the other plans such as Google's "Loon", which is not available yet, want to provide two-way communication using helium balloons.
