David Crosby: Joni Mitchell Had Aneurysm, Cannot Speak

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/david-crosby-joni-mitchell-had-aneurysm-cannot-speak-20150626

David Crosby has revealed that Joni Mitchell suffered from an aneurysm when she was hospitalized in late May. "Nobody found her for a while," he told the Huffington Post. "She took a terrible hit. To my knowledge she is not speaking yet...She's going to have to struggle back from it the way you struggle back from a traumatic brain injury…She's a tough girl, and very smart. So, how much she's going to come back and when, I don't know and I'm not going to guess."

There has been little information about Mitchell's condition since she entered a Los Angeles hospital on May 26th. TMZ reported that she was in intensive care and had undergone a surgical procedure, but a spokesperson said she was "awake and in good spirits." Days later, her camp released an official statement: "Joni remains under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably. We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day."

Mitchell hasn't released an album of new material since 2007's Shine and hasn't toured since the late 1990s. She claims to suffer from a rare condition called Morgellons disease. "Morgellons is constantly morphing," she told the Daily Mail. "There are times when it's directly attacking the nervous system, as if you're being bitten by fleas and lice. It's all in the tissue and it's not a hallucination. It was eating me alive, sucking the juices out. I've been sick all my life." (A study by the CDC found that Morgellons may be a mental disorder and not a physical condition.)

Crosby has been close to Mitchell since the 1960s. "I love her," he told the Huffington Post. "She's probably the best of us - probably the greatest living singer-songwriter."

...that she is another icon from my youth. I don't know if it's more apt to call her the female Bob Dylan or to call Bob the male Joni Mitchell, but that's how big she is, that's how she changed everything. This breaks my heart.

there has been conflicting announcements so I assumed she suffered some damage.

Depending upon the extent of compromise, of course. Since she has a musician's mind, she will probably "rewire" most efficiently using those pathways.

If she has any amount of speech recovery at all, she might sing before she talks.

Solitary folk singers never really moved me when I was young, but I'd like to give Joni another shot.

Anyone recommend five songs?

I'm encouraged that after the operation she was in good spirits.
What a terrible thing to happen to one so very talented with her words.
15 years ago I had a stroke and it took about a year of therapy til I could speak normally again, so
I know she has a difficult road ahead of her. I wish her the best, and hope she recovers well.
She has been one of my favorite singers since forever, and touched my life in so many ways.
I am very sorry to hear about this.

What kind of respect did Joni command from her fellow musicians? Look at the band. Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Don Alias, Michael Brecker, and the immortal Jaco Pastorius as musical director. Frank Zappa was the only other musician able to put that kind of firepower into one band.

She just made a lot of bold, experimental moves, like her "Mingus" album. She's an artist. She went where the muse took her, not where the marketplace beckoned her. She could have been the most boring, predictable "folk singer" in the world. Same as when Dylan went electric and got booed repeatedly. They both said "OK, I did THIS thing over here, now I'm gonna do THAT thing over THERE." Just like Neil Young, Zappa, Lou Reed...if you are an artist, you follow the art...not orders.

First time I heard it in '76 I was convinced there was an uncredited Fender Rhodes player. Nope. It was all Jaco. Changed the way I thought about playing bass forever. When I finally realized what was going n five years later. I wasn't too bright back then.

Jaco was a sympathetic / empathetic player...he played in the moment, from the center of the vibe. He obviously was no simple "timekeeper." I am a huge Larry Carlton fan. I'm not as impressed with some of the more lightweight stuff he did with Fourplay, but when it comes to Steely Dan, The Crusaders, and a lot of his solo work, the man is king. That said, I think Metheny was a better match for Joni. He just had a "wider head space," more of a free spirit and explorer than Carlton. It's a nuance thing, I probably am not expressing it that well in words. Carlton is a jazz cat and master musician who likes to improvise and does it well. Metheny is a "vapor trail in the empty air" as David Gilmour once sang. You can't define Metheny's playing style as easily as Carlton, just as you could never limit Joni to being "a folk singer." That alliance between Joni, Jaco and Metheny was easily as powerful and potent as Dylan's collaborations with The Band...fully "sympatico" musicians following the muse.

This is my single all-time favorite Metheny performance..."Are You Going With Me" from "Travels."
