Mobile County, Ala., issues its first same-sex marriage license to 2 women after months of refusing

to sell marriage licenses to anyone.

But the county in Alabama where To Kill A Mockingbird was written, and the movie filmed..
is refusing to perform civil marriages for anyone.
You can buy a license, and you can get married if you can find a pastor, etc to do it, but no civil marriages any longer by the Probate Judge.

Sounds like a great place to fire up one of those Unitarian Universalist churches, if they don't have one already...?

That's if people want to stay local....since all marriages in all states are recognized, a destination wedding might be a better option!

County Probate Judges are not required to perform marriages.
So they can stop if they want to.

However, the issue of Probate Offices issuing LICENSES is different.
A very few counties have said they will not issue licenses any longer, but may run afoul of the Court order
The Supreme Court's decision affirmed marriage as a fundamental right.
So denying marriage licenses to everyone does not follow the court's order.
There will be one or 2 County Judges who will pull a Ray Moore and get all ass holey about it,
but eventually reality will set in.
Even George Wallace caved after his hissy fit.

The majority of the counties are doing business as usual.

Just look for your nearest UU church or Pagan clergy.

I kept telling Mr. Dixie I would consent to marriage when marriage was legal for everyone.
That was 17 years ago.
Now in my county, the Judge is refusing to perform civil marriages and the churches certainly will not.

Of course, one can go out of county to get a civil marriage.
