(36,063 posts)As Governor, Scott Walker has a deeply troubling record of working to undermine even the most basic rights of LGBT residents in Wisconsin, like a domestic partnership registry, said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs. Gov. Walkers opposition to marriage equality puts him at odds with voters at home in Wisconsin, and the nation. Given his history, Gov. Walkers failure to make clear that he would respect and uphold todays ruling can only be considered a sign that he will work to undermine and reverse the ability of LGBT couples to get married like everyone else.
Residents in Walkers home state of Wisconsin support same-sex marriage, by a 59-33 margin, according to the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute.
The Human Rights Campaign has released detailed background documents highlighting the anti-LGBT records of current and potential 2016 candidates. More on their records can be found at http://www.hrc.org/2016RepublicanFacts/.

After Supreme Court ruling, Wisconsin legislators call for changes to state law

The crowd reacts as the ruling on same-sex marriage was announced outside of the Supreme Court in Washington on Friday. The Supreme Court declared Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the US.
The U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage throughout the country spurred two calls for legislative action in Wisconsin one proposal from supporters of the decision, and one from an opponent.
Reps. JoCasta Zamarripa, D-Milwaukee, and Mark Spreitzer, D-Beloit, with Sen. Tim Carpenter, D-Milwaukee, are proposing a constitutional amendment to scrap the provision of the state constitution recognizing marriage only between one man and one woman.
The proposal must pass in two consecutive sessions of the Legislature before it could go to voters for their approval.
"Wisconsin should ensure its on the right side of history by removing this discriminatory language from our states constitution," the lawmakers said in their co-sponsorship memo, sent Friday morning.
The state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage was approved with the support of 59 percent of the state's voters in 2006.
Since then, public opinion in Wisconsin has nearly flipped.
In 2005, before the ban was enacted, 24 percent of voters in the state supported full recognition of marriage between same-sex couples. In 2009, the number had increased to 27 percent but an April 2014 survey commissioned by Fair Wisconsin showed it had climbed to 51 percent. And a Marquette University Law School poll released in May 2014 showed support among 55 percent of voters.
At the national level, support is at 60 percent, according to a Gallup poll.
Meanwhile, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt, R-Fond du Lac, said on Friday that Wisconsin should now repeal its domestic partner registry.

The U.S. Court decision to confirm equal protection of the law for every American was the correct decision.
I am elated that the Supreme Court has confirmed that all Americans are equal under the U.S. Constitution.
Efforts to single out any group of people from the protections granted by the U.S. Constitution are illegal and un-American.
