Someone I know came out today, following the SCOTUS decision.

That decision gave her the courage to come out as bisexual publicly in a Facebook post. Her post has received great support from her friends and family. I say to her: BRAVA!

I assured her that this friend would never do that, ever.

She's not in Chicago, though.

the same thing! Last night in front of a big group of people-and a fairly conservative bunch at that! You should have seen the looks on faces of some the older guys. It was like the Star Trek where Kirk confuses the androids and their brain overloads. It was someone they had known and worked with for 20 years and I think it made their brains go into some infinite logic loop.

More power to each of them! They will discover who are true friends and who are not. That's a good thing to know, I think.

There's a sort of positive feedback loop at work in the progress of gay rights.

The more that gay folks come out and people actually "know one," the more acceptance we get from society. And as society gets more accepting, more gay folks feel safe to come out.

It's easier today than it was even a few years ago, but it's still a hard thing to do. Congratulations to your friend. A closet is a lousy place to live.

People will realize LGBT people are their sisters, brothers, uncles, friends. People will realize they're normal human beings that just want the same things from life that everyone else does.

That is why Harvey Milk advocated that those in the LGBT community come out.
