We saw your wedding announcement in the paper...YOU'RE FIRED

This scenario is completely legal in 29 states according to The Human Right Campaign so celebrate today and get ready to strap on your armor on Monday morning our fight is no where near over:

From www.hrc.org

Qualified, hardworking Americans are denied job opportunities, fired or otherwise discriminated against just because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). There is no federal law that consistently protects LGBT individuals from employment discrimination; there are no state laws in 29 states that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, and in 32 states that do so based on gender identity. As a result, LGBT people face serious discrimination in employment, including being fired, being denied a promotion and experiencing harassment on the job.

Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia have passed laws prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, and 18 states and D.C. also prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. Although these laws provide important protections, according to a 2013 General Accounting Office (GAO) report, relatively few complaints of discrimination based on sexual orientation have been filed in these states.

It would seem logical - if you can be married legally, you should not be losing a job.

Mass was the 2nd state in the country to pass anti-discrimination laws specifically noting sexual orientation. Transgendered individuals received protection in 2011.

I would go to schools to do presentations and I'd be talking to teachers and counselors about how to support the kids and the high suicide rate and after the presentation I would always get someone who would take me aside and say that they wished they could do more but they were afraid they would get fired. Outside of Houston and Austin, nothing has changed in Texas. That's why I worry.

It's been nearly 20 years - I think it's time we made it happen.

in the House by Bella Abzug and Ed Koch. It would have covered employment and housing. In the 90's proponents dropped the housing part and went for ENDA, first vote in 94 and it has been introduced in every Congress but one since then. So it's been a long time.
Meanwhile, people will opine that LGBT rights are not at all about economics and it's just some silly social issue that does not really matter. Silly shit like jobs, housing, benefits.....

Non-descrimination should be across the board for sexual orientation, race, religion and gender (cis and trans).

The Supreme Court's ruling will result in backlash in some parts of the country, though, and we should be ready for it.

denied tenure because of just a suspicion of being gay. I don't even know if he really was gay. He was divorced from a female when very young.
The school system was overly cautious because they had two incidents of abuse by male employees.

I think fair hiring practices involving openly gays is going to be very hard to overcome in education.

He dated once back in the 70s and he still talks about it. Sex for him is all "theory". A 60+ year old neurotic virgin that you would SWEAR is doing a Woodie Allen impression and people often think he's gay,....especially after they hear him say he's a fan of old Hollywood dance movies. I got him the complete Fred and Ginger collection for Christmas.
