(another elephant thread)
The reason she did this instead of giving birth in the wild? Most likely so that the other elephants at the sanctuary could be there for the birth. The way that this group of elephants welcomed the newest member of their crew (her name is Emma) into the world is totally amazing, and luckily, it was all captured on film.

(17,320 posts)The elephants will be extinct soon. But, it won't be too long before humans join them, after having killed almost everything on Earth.
It's amazing that humans now, for the first time, have the technology to predict the outcome of our brutish and stupid behavior yet we continue without even slowing down. For the most part, humans don't seem the care anything about any other living things.

(8,175 posts)That video made me cry. And I love how they buried the placenta...a way to keep predators from smelling it, and seeking out the new born, I suspect.
Elephants are so awesome. Why we haven't managed their slaughter better is beyond me.

The rhinos are also almost extinct due to the demand for the horns, used largely in aphrodisiac tic preparations that don't even work and the dagger handles of rich men. (How about substituting some Viagra guys? And it works. Plastic for your toy knives.
